A shared channel does not decide what an agent is allowed to do. The agent’s effective authority comes from the identity and permissions its connected service checks, together with the data boundaries and approval rules governing each action. If a privileged connection can be persuaded to act for someone who lacks that access, the setup risks becoming a “confused deputy.”

What does it mean to ask whose authority an agent is spending?

A principal is the identity a system checks when deciding whether to allow an operation. For an agent connected to another service, that may be a user account, an agent-owned service account, a token, or another delegated role. The practical question is not simply who typed the message or which channel the agent appears in: it is which identity the downstream service actually sees, and what that identity can access.

A channel provides a conversation and visibility context. It is not, by itself, proof that the agent’s connector is acting with each participant’s permissions. Slack describes agents as systems that can use tools to read, write, run workflows, and invoke other agents; the connected identity and the platform’s enforcement rules determine what those operations can do. Slack’s agent-building guidance discusses tools, bounded authority, and confirmation.

Can an agent in a shared channel act as me?

It depends on how the connection is configured. The visible agent handle and the person who requested an action do not establish which account authenticates to the connected service. OpenAI’s guidance for ChatGPT Workspace Agents connected to Slack says the setup requires shared authentication. It recommends an agent-owned service account and warns that if a personal account is configured as the shared connection, other users may be able to trigger actions through that account. OpenAI’s Workspace Agents guidance explains this setup.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That warning does not mean every agent automatically acts as the person who invoked it, or that every product uses the same identity model. A service account also does not, by itself, guarantee that the agent respects each user’s access. The exact authority depends on the connector’s authentication model and where permissions are enforced.

How does a shared connection become a confused deputy?

A confused deputy is a more-privileged system induced to perform an action for someone who does not have permission to perform it directly. AWS defines the problem as “a security issue where an entity that doesn’t have permission to perform an action can coerce a more-privileged entity to perform the action.” AWS’s explanation of the confused deputy problem describes the security pattern.

In a shared channel, the risk is that a member asks an agent to use a connector whose credentials carry broader access than that member has. If the agent retrieves restricted information or makes a change without checking the requester’s authority, the connector can become a path around the intended boundary. The channel invitation does not fix that mismatch; the system must enforce appropriate permissions when it retrieves data and when it acts.

How should an agent preserve the requesting user’s data boundary?

Slack’s agent-design guidance says an agent should not access or use information the invoking user cannot access, including inaccessible files or meeting materials. It also calls for clear identity cues so people can tell they are interacting with an AI system and when it is acting on a user’s behalf. Slack’s agent design guidance covers these boundaries.

That principle needs to apply to both what the agent reads and what it reveals. Even if a connector can retrieve information, the agent should not use that information for a requester who lacks access. Likewise, a response posted to a shared channel may be visible to members with different underlying permissions. App and channel design should not expose content or capabilities to people who otherwise would not have them.

What should administrators review before enabling a shared-channel agent?

Review the identity and permissions behind each connector, not just the channel invitation or the agent’s prompt. These checks apply across a deployment, but individual products may implement them differently.

  • Administrative controls: Review how administrators restrict access, approve apps, monitor use, and remove an agent or connection.

Which safeguards reduce the risk?

Use a narrowly scoped agent-owned identity for shared connections

Where the platform supports it, OpenAI recommends an agent-owned service account for a shared Slack connection rather than making a personal account connection available to a broad audience. Limit that identity’s access to what the agent’s task requires. This reduces reliance on an individual’s credentials, but it does not replace checks that preserve each requester’s data boundary.

Require confirmation for consequential writes

Slack recommends explicit human confirmation for actions with real-world output, such as sending email, approving a request, or updating a record. Its guidance says: “Any action with real-world output (sending an email, approvals, updating a record) should require explicit human confirmation.” This is Slack’s design guidance, not a universal legal requirement. Confirmation is an additional safeguard, not a substitute for appropriate identity and access enforcement.

Review scopes and restrict access beyond the prompt

Examine the app’s scopes and requested permissions before installation, and limit the connected systems and audience to what the use case needs. A prompt telling an agent not to access something cannot, on its own, remove permissions granted to its connector. App review and access controls need to provide boundaries outside the conversation.

Use channel-level AI restrictions where available

Slack documents an administrator setting to restrict AI access to selected channels, canvases, and lists. The feature is listed for Enterprise+ and can be managed by authorized administrators. Slack also states that the control restricts AI read access; it does not prevent every possible interaction. Slack’s channel and content restriction guidance describes its scope and limitation.

OpenAI specifically recommends an agent-owned service account for the shared Slack authentication model it documents. That recommendation should not be read as proof that service accounts always preserve end-user permissions or that every platform supports the same arrangement.

Can administrators restrict an agent’s access to channels?

Slack documents an administrator control for restricting AI read access to selected channels, canvases, and lists, with availability listed for Enterprise+. Because Slack says this setting limits read access rather than every kind of interaction, administrators should also review app permissions, connected identities, write actions, and channel visibility. A channel restriction is one control in a broader access design, not a complete authorization model.

Does channel membership authorize an agent to use a connected account?

No. Channel membership identifies who shares a conversation; it does not establish which credentials a connector uses or prove that every member may access the same underlying data. Check the connected identity, enforce the requester’s data boundary, and control consequential actions separately.

Is there a measured rate of shared-channel agent authorization failures?

The official material cited here provides definitions, setup guidance, and security recommendations, but no statistic quantifying how often this risk occurs. A prevalence rate or incident count is therefore not established by these sources.
