A share link grants access according to settings chosen in the file-sharing service; it is not automatically permanent or open to everyone. The settings define who can use it, what they can do, and whether the link can expire or be revoked. If a link is set for anyone with the link, forwarding it may let another person open the item without signing in. Check both the link’s audience and its permissions before sharing.
What does “scoped grant” mean?
A share link is a way to grant access to a particular file or folder under conditions set by the service. Its scope has three practical parts: the audience allowed to use it, the actions they can take, and how long the link remains usable. The available choices vary by service, account, and administrator policy.
For example, Microsoft describes Anyone, organization, and specific-people links. Google Drive lets an owner choose general access and assign a role. These are different ways to control access, not guarantees that every service offers the same options. Microsoft Learn: How shareable links work in OneDrive and SharePoint; Google Drive: Share files.
Can anyone with the link open the file?
It depends on the audience setting. An “Anyone” link in Microsoft’s model does not require the recipient to authenticate and can be passed to other people. In that case, possession of the link—not verification of each recipient’s identity—is what enables access through that link. Other link types may require an organizational account or access for named people. Microsoft Learn’s explanation of shareable links describes the distinctions.

Before sharing, identify the intended audience. If access should be limited to particular people, choose a restricted or named-recipient option when the service offers one rather than assuming that an unlisted URL is private.
What can recipients do with the link?
Audience and actions are separate controls. A link can be broadly accessible but limited to viewing, or limited to named people who can edit. Microsoft Graph describes view and edit link types, while Google Drive offers Viewer, Commenter, and Editor roles. Choose the least permissive role that meets the need, and verify the role as well as the audience. Microsoft Graph link permissions; Google Drive sharing roles.

Do share links expire?
Some services and account configurations support expiration; it is not a universal property of share links. Microsoft Graph supports an optional expirationDateTime for a link permission, and Microsoft Support documents managing or clearing a link’s expiration in OneDrive sharing controls. Google says expiration dates are available to eligible work or school accounts. Dropbox says access through a shared link ends at its expiration date. Check the current controls for your service and account, since eligibility and available options can depend on plan or administrator settings. Microsoft Graph; Microsoft OneDrive sharing controls; Google Drive sharing; Dropbox shared-link permissions.
How do you revoke a share link?
Use the service’s sharing or access-management controls to remove the link or change its settings. Microsoft Support documents managing access and removing a link in OneDrive. Microsoft Learn characterizes an Anyone link in its SharePoint model as “a transferable, revocable secret key”; removing that link revokes access through that grant. Microsoft Support: Share files and folders in OneDrive; Microsoft Learn: shareable links.

Revoking one link does not necessarily remove every route to the file. Someone may still have direct, organizational, or inherited permission. If the goal is to stop a particular person’s access entirely, review the item’s full access list and remove any other applicable permissions as well. Microsoft documents this distinction for link access and other permissions in its OneDrive and SharePoint link guidance.
