The report behind the phrase “Related searches based on your browsing” describes a Google interface observation, not a confirmed Bing test. It also does not establish that browsing history actually powered the suggestions. Microsoft documents personalization options for Edge and algorithmic related suggestions in Bing, but neither confirms that Bing tested this exact label.
What was observed—and which search engine was involved?
Search Engine Roundtable reported on July 30, 2026, that a search box appeared with the wording “Related searches based on your browsing.” The report attributes the observation to Google; it does not say Bing was testing the feature. A later observation of the wording in sponsored results was attributed to advertising professional Anthony Higman and dated September 9, 2026. Search Engine Roundtable’s July report and its September follow-up describe reported interface observations, not a confirmed general rollout.
The distinction matters: the title’s Bing attribution is not supported by the located report. The report also leaves the feature’s data source uncertain. Barry Schwartz characterized it as “not 100% clear” whether browsing history powered the suggestions or whether only the label had changed. That uncertainty is not confirmation that Google used Chrome browsing history.

What Microsoft says about Bing suggestions and Edge activity
Microsoft’s documentation describes a separate, established feature: Bing can show related suggestions near search results to help people explore topics. Suggestions are generated algorithmically using the popularity of related searches and relevance signals that include search history, trends, location, and language. Microsoft product manager Martin Stoddart described Bing Related Searches as “a list of other related or exploratory searches you might want to try, based on the query itself.” These general descriptions do not verify the reported Google interface or establish that Bing used browsing history for a feature with the reported label. Microsoft’s explanation of Bing Related Searches provides product context.
Microsoft separately says Edge browsing activity may be collected and used to personalize advertising, search results, shopping recommendations, and other Microsoft experiences when the user has permitted collection. InPrivate and Guest browsing are excluded from that collection. The company’s documentation describes a control to turn off saving browsing activity for personalization. It also explains that ad-interest controls are separate: turning off personalized ads does not, by itself, disable use of Edge browsing activity to personalize search results and other Microsoft experiences. How Bing describes ads
Microsoft says Bing advertisements are labeled “Ads,” are provided by Microsoft Advertising, and are primarily displayed based on search queries. This is a general description of Bing ads; it cannot show how the separately reported Google test worked or establish whether Bing ran a parallel experiment. Microsoft’s August 2024 EU Digital Services Act assessment also notes that product features may be tested, modified, removed, improved, or adjusted, but it does not identify this reported 2026 feature as a Bing test. Microsoft’s Digital Services Act transparency information provides that broader context.

What is—and is not—established
- Reported: Google was observed displaying the phrase “Related searches based on your browsing”; a later report placed the wording in sponsored results.
- Unclear: The reports do not establish whether browsing history generated the suggestions, how many people saw the interface, where it appeared, how long any test ran, or what effect it had.
- Documented by Microsoft: Bing related suggestions use algorithmic relevance signals, and Edge activity can be used for personalization with permission.
- Not confirmed: No cited Microsoft announcement or first-party evidence confirms that Bing tested this exact label.
In short, the available reporting does not support saying that Bing is showing browsing-based related searches below sponsored ads. It supports a narrower account: Google was reported to have displayed the wording, while Microsoft documents other Bing and Edge personalization behaviors that should not be conflated with that observation.
