As of the National Hurricane Center’s 2 p.m. EDT outlook on October 6, 2026, a disturbance in the southwestern Gulf of America had a near-100% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone within 48 hours and within seven days. The NHC expected it to turn toward the northern Gulf Coast, but said it was too early to determine specific impacts. The record question was conditional: the system would have to reach hurricane strength after October 8 to set the reported record for the latest first Atlantic hurricane of a season.

What the NHC said about Gulf disturbance AL92

The National Hurricane Center’s 8 a.m. EDT outlook on October 6 described showers and thunderstorms organizing around a broad low-pressure area in the southwestern Gulf of America, designated AL92. The agency gave it a 90% chance of tropical cyclone formation within both 48 hours and seven days, and said a tropical depression could form within about a day as the system drifted eastward. It advised people from Florida’s Panhandle to Louisiana to monitor the system.

By the 2 p.m. EDT outlook, satellite imagery and surface observations showed better organization and falling surface pressure. The NHC said advisories were likely later that day or night if the trend continued, and raised the formation chance to near 100% within both 48 hours and seven days. Those figures were probabilities of tropical cyclone formation—not a guarantee of hurricane strength or a particular landfall. Read the NHC’s October 6, 2026 outlook.

What was—and was not—known about its path and impacts

The NHC expected the disturbance to turn north or northeast toward the northern Gulf Coast by the end of the week. In both October 6 outlooks, however, the agency said it was too early to determine specific impacts. A likely general direction is not a precise track, and the formation probability did not establish where, when, or how strongly a storm might affect land.

An October 6 report by Ellyn Lapointe at Gizmodo described model scenarios spanning possible landfall locations from Biloxi, Mississippi, to Florida’s Panhandle, as well as a wide range of possible intensity. Those were modeled possibilities reported by Gizmodo, not a settled NHC track or forecast certainty. The report said that if the system received a name, it would be called Isaias. Read Gizmodo’s report.

The latest operational snapshot cited here is the NHC’s October 6, 2 p.m. EDT outlook. It does not establish AL92’s status or eventual impacts after that update. For current storm status, check the National Hurricane Center rather than relying on an older forecast.

Why the October 8 record date matters

Gizmodo’s October 6 report, attributing the historical claim to the National Weather Service, identified October 8, 1905, as the latest date on record for the first Atlantic hurricane in a season. Under that account, the 2026 system would break the record only if it reached hurricane strength after October 8. The historical record page was not independently verified here, so the date and record claim should be understood with that attribution.

A tropical depression, a named tropical storm, and a hurricane are distinct stages of intensity. Becoming a tropical cyclone—or receiving the name Isaias—would not by itself meet the hurricane-record condition. The system would need to attain hurricane strength after the reported record date.

How a below-normal season outlook fits this threat

NOAA’s May 21, 2026 initial outlook assigned a 55% chance to a below-normal Atlantic season, 35% to a near-normal season, and 10% to an above-normal season. Its ranges with 70% probability were 8–14 named storms, 3–6 hurricanes, and 1–3 major hurricanes. In its August 6 update, NOAA raised the chance of a below-normal season to 75%, with 70%-probability ranges of 7–13 named storms, 2–6 hurricanes, and 0–2 major hurricanes. By that August update, Arthur and Bertha had formed and no hurricane had formed. These were dated seasonal projections, not forecasts for an individual storm or a specific coastline. NOAA’s May 2026 outlook and August update explain the forecasts.

NOAA’s seasonal outlooks do not predict landfall. The agency’s August update said El Niño had emerged in June and increased wind shear, which tends to inhibit Atlantic storm formation or strengthening. That broad seasonal influence does not prevent an individual storm from developing or make a particular place safe. As NOAA National Weather Service Director Ken Graham put it: “It only takes one storm to make for a very bad season.” NOAA’s preparedness guidance makes the same practical point.

How to follow updates and prepare

  • Use the NHC’s latest Atlantic outlooks and advisories for storm formation, track, and intensity updates; the October 6 forecast snapshot can become outdated quickly.
  • Follow local emergency-management instructions for decisions about watches, warnings, evacuation, and sheltering.
  • Review NOAA’s hurricane preparedness guidance before a storm threatens. NOAA weather radio is one way to receive alerts, but the cited guidance does not endorse a particular radio model.
