Researchers have created and observed Bethe strings—quantum particles bound together by their interactions—in an ultracold gas of cesium atoms. The University of Innsbruck reported the experiment on 14 September 2026. The advance is not a new technology for consumers: it gives physicists a controllable atomic-gas setting in which to study these unusual one-dimensional states.

What are Bethe strings?

Bethe strings are multiparticle bound states associated with certain one-dimensional quantum systems. Their particles stay together because of their interactions, not because chemical bonds join them as in a molecule. The University of Innsbruck describes the states as existing only in one dimension and says they were predicted in 1931 as part of a mathematical description of quantum many-body systems.

The name can suggest literal strands, but a Bethe string is a quantum state, not a tiny physical cord. In this experiment, the states consisted of cesium atoms bound into clusters of different sizes, including clusters of six or more.

How did researchers create them?

A team led by quantum physicist Hanns-Christoph Nägerl cooled cesium atoms to temperatures a few billionths of a degree above absolute zero. They divided the cloud into several thousand narrow tubes, confining the atoms so they could move essentially in one dimension. The researchers then tuned the atoms’ interactions from repulsive to attractive, enabling bound states to form.

These conditions matter because the experiment depends on both the particles’ interactions and their restricted geometry. Unlike a solid-state magnetic system, an ultracold atomic gas lets researchers control geometry, particle density and interactions. The university says Bethe strings had also been observed experimentally in solid-state magnetic systems; the new result is their realization in a tunable ultracold gas.

How did the team detect the binding?

The key test compared how the atoms behaved under two expansion procedures. The researchers looked for a difference in the energy measured after the atoms expanded while confined to one dimension and after the confinement was removed.

  1. Keep the tubes in place: The atoms expanded along the tubes. The university reports that colliding strings remained intact.
  2. Remove the confinement: The atoms expanded in three dimensions. Because Bethe strings are one-dimensional states, this release caused them to break apart, converting binding energy into additional motion.

The contrast between the two measurements was the reported signature of the strings. For unbound particles in the repulsive regime, the two procedures gave essentially the same energy, according to the university.

What is new—and what the result does not show

The result demonstrates the reported creation and observation of Bethe strings in a controllable ultracold-gas setting. It adds a new experimental platform to prior observations in solid-state magnetic systems and creates opportunities to investigate how these collective states form and interact.

The institutional account does not establish why an ultracold-gas realization took until now, so the date of the prediction should not be mistaken for a documented explanation of the delay. Nor does the result point to an immediate consumer application: it is a fundamental-physics experiment conducted under specialized laboratory conditions.

Why the 1931 prediction matters now

A mathematical prediction can describe a system that is difficult to isolate or measure in a laboratory. Here, the important step is that researchers report creating the predicted states in an atomic gas whose geometry and interactions they can tune, then identifying them through a measurement tied to their one-dimensional binding.

That makes the experiment useful as a platform for further basic research, rather than evidence that Bethe strings have a ready-made practical use. The university lists support from the Austrian Science Fund through a Wittgenstein Prize grant, the European Union through an ERC grant, and the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
