The headline’s app cannot be identified reliably from the available product information: both Submarine and WindTerm describe combining several remote-access tools, and neither source verifies the author’s personal experience. If your goal is to replace a separate SSH terminal, file-transfer client, and tunnel manager, Submarine is the closer match to the PuTTY-plus-WinSCP-plus-tunnel-manager setup described here. WindTerm is another option if you also need Telnet, serial, or local-shell sessions.

Which app does the headline describe?

There are two plausible candidates, so it would be misleading to present either as the confirmed app the author used. Submarine’s project page describes an all-in-one tabbed app for terminal access, SFTP, and forwarding, and explicitly positions it as a combination of PuTTY, WinSCP, and a tunnel manager (Submarine project page; Submarine project page). WindTerm also promotes consolidating tools, but describes replacing a basic terminal, a separate SSH client, and an FTP app (WindTerm official site).

Those are project descriptions, not independent verification of an author’s years using PuTTY, a completed migration, or comparative performance. The useful question for a reader is which documented features match their own setup.

What to compare before replacing PuTTY

“SSH client” can mean more than opening a terminal. Check whether an alternative covers the entire workflow you actually use:

  • Terminal and session management: saved hosts, tabs or panes, and importing existing connection settings.
  • File transfer: built-in SFTP can remove the need to open a separate file-transfer app.
  • Forwarding: confirm which kinds of local, remote, or dynamic/SOCKS forwarding are documented.
  • Trust and credentials: look for host-key verification, how credentials are stored, and whether profiles sync between devices.
  • Platform and installation: confirm support for your operating system and check current release instructions, including any security warnings.
  • License and data handling: distinguish an open-source license from optional sync services or credential-vault features.

How the leading candidates differ

Capability Submarine WindTerm
Documented sessions Terminal sessions; project describes support for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android. (Submarine project page) SSH, SFTP, Telnet, serial, and local shells; Windows, macOS, and Linux. (WindTerm official site)
File transfer SFTP browser and folder mirroring. (Submarine project page) SFTP. (WindTerm official site)
Forwarding Local, remote, SOCKS, and other forwarding modes are listed. (Submarine project page) Local, remote, and dynamic forwarding are listed. (WindTerm official site)
Organization and import Tabbed interface; imports PuTTY session exports in .reg format, among other imports. (Submarine project page) Tabs, split panes, a session tree, and SSH-config import. (WindTerm official site)
Credential and profile features Encrypted profile sync is listed. (Submarine project page) A credential vault is listed. (WindTerm official site)
License Project describes it as free and MIT-licensed. (Submarine project page) Project describes it as free and open-source. (WindTerm official site)

These are capabilities claimed by the projects, not results from an independent security or performance evaluation. Feature availability and installation details can change; check the current project release and documentation before migrating important connections.

When Submarine is the closer fit

Submarine’s documented combination most directly maps to a PuTTY terminal, an SFTP client, and a separate forwarding tool. Its page lists a terminal, SFTP browser, folder mirroring, several forwarding modes, and encrypted profile sync. It also says it can import PuTTY session exports from .reg files, which may reduce the work of recreating saved sessions. The project describes the app as free, MIT-licensed, and built with Rust and Tauri (Submarine project page).

  • This listing is for 10 pcs AM7 American lock key blanks, nickel plated over brass, made in China.

Before relying on an import, verify that your exported settings came across correctly and review host details and credentials in the new app. The project’s feature list does not establish that every PuTTY configuration or workflow transfers without adjustment.

When WindTerm may suit a broader workflow

WindTerm documents SSH alongside Telnet, serial, and local-shell sessions, as well as SFTP, split panes, tabs, a session tree, a credential vault, forwarding, and SSH-config import. Its range of session types can make it a better candidate when your work extends beyond SSH (WindTerm official site).

Rank #3
Cryptnox FIDO2 Security Key White PVC - Customizable NFC Card for 2FA MFA
  • CUSTOMIZABLE BLANK FACE: White PVC card ready for in-house printing so you can add your own logo, employee ID or branding to a working FIDO2 security key
  • HARDWARE 2FA AND MFA: FIDO Alliance Certified FIDO2 v2.1 with CTAP Level 1 for phishing-resistant login on compatible FIDO2 and WebAuthn services
  • PASSKEY READY: Serves as a WebAuthn passkey and enables passwordless sign-in where the service supports security keys, subject to each service policy
  • DUAL INTERFACE: Works by NFC tap over ISO 14443 or a contact card reader over ISO 7816, an NFC smart card that is not a USB device
  • CERTIFIED SECURE ELEMENT: NXP JCOP 4.5 (P71D600) with Common Criteria EAL6+ (augmented), backed by a 2 year warranty

The official site’s consolidation claim is not the same as the PuTTY, WinSCP, and tunnel-manager scenario, and it does not establish that WindTerm is the app behind the headline. Treat testimonials hosted on the project site as vendor-hosted statements, not independent evidence.

Other options and security checks

SSH Ache

SSH Ache documents terminal tabs, SFTP, local, remote, and SOCKS forwarding, jump hosts, and host-key verification. Its repository page says its macOS builds are unsigned and not notarised; check the current release information and your operating system’s warning flow before installing (SSH Ache repository). Host-key verification is important because it helps you detect an unexpected server identity; do not dismiss a changed-key warning without confirming the cause.

Zync

Zync documents SSH, SFTP, forwarding, an encrypted vault, and sync (Zync project page). Its own comparison material discusses licensing and platform differences from other products, but those comparisons and terms are vendor-authored and may change. Check the current licensing, platform support, and data-sync behavior directly before choosing it.

A practical migration checklist

  1. Inventory your current work: list saved SSH hosts, file-transfer tasks, forwarding rules, and any non-SSH sessions. This reveals whether a replacement really removes separate tools.
  2. Choose by required features: use the documented capability comparison above; do not assume an app has a feature simply because it is described as an SSH client.
  3. Install from the project’s current release source: check operating-system support and any signing or notarisation notice for that specific release.
  4. Import or recreate settings: if using Submarine, its project page documents importing PuTTY .reg session exports; WindTerm documents SSH-config import. Review imported hosts and connection details before use.
  5. Validate one low-risk connection: confirm the hostname, account, authentication method, and host key, then test the terminal, SFTP, and forwarding functions you depend on.
  6. Keep the old setup until verified: move routine work only after you have confirmed that the new app handles your required sessions and file operations correctly.
