What does the future of industrial communications look like? More connected networks, with technologies such as industrial Ethernet, time-sensitive networking (TSN), OPC UA, Single Pair Ethernet (SPE), Wi-Fi 6 and private 5G developing alongside one another. The direction is toward sharing data and, where engineering allows, network infrastructure—not toward one standard replacing every existing plant network.
Why are industrial networks converging?
Factories increasingly need networks to carry different kinds of traffic: time-critical control, operational data, and information used by analytics or cloud-connected systems. The Industrial Ethernet Book described this shift in its May 19, 2025, Special Report: State of Industrial Connectivity, which identified IT/OT convergence, cloud integration, cybersecurity and changing connectivity technologies as forces shaping industrial networks.
A shared infrastructure can make it easier to move information between devices and higher-level systems, but it is an industry direction—not a guarantee that any plant can combine networks without redesign. Control timing, installed equipment, reliability needs and security boundaries still have to be addressed in the specific deployment.

OPC UA is an industrial communication framework; TSN is a set of Ethernet capabilities intended to support time-sensitive traffic. OPC UA over TSN brings them together as part of an effort to support interoperable communication across automation levels on a common network. It is a standards and engineering direction, not proof that all vendors’ devices already interoperate on every plant network.

The OPC Foundation’s Field Level Communications (FLC) initiative is working on application profiles, information models, network mappings and certification intended to extend OPC UA toward field-level automation. The Foundation describes its aim this way: “The goal of the FLC Initiative is to deliver an open, cohesive approach to implement OPC UA including TSN and associated application profiles.” Its roadmap discusses mappings involving technologies including Ethernet/TSN, Ethernet-APL/SPE, WLAN and cellular networks such as 5G; those roadmap items should not be confused with universally deployed capabilities. (OPC Foundation, Working Groups and OPC UA Roadmap; page dates not stated.)
For a real installation, the relevant questions include whether the required devices and switches support the needed profiles, whether the network is configured for the traffic, and whether its behavior satisfies the application’s timing and reliability requirements. Naming TSN alone does not settle those questions.

The evidence supports evaluating 5G as a complement for selected wireless use cases, not treating it as a general replacement for wired industrial Ethernet. Mobility and the ability to connect equipment without a fixed cable may make wireless worth considering, while fixed assets and timing-sensitive control may impose requirements that must be tested against the actual network and application.

NIST Technical Note 2363, published February 4, 2026, examines software-based private 5G networks for industrial, mission-critical and time-sensitive applications. It describes such networks as a promising candidate and considers potential advantages such as open-source code and reduced dependence on proprietary infrastructure. Its scope also explicitly includes adoption difficulties, performance compliance, measurement and evaluation. Those potential advantages are not measured savings, and the report does not establish that a given private 5G deployment will meet a particular control requirement.
The Industrial Ethernet Book’s 2025 outlook also discusses wireless real-time communication with 5G and Wi-Fi 6 alongside wired developments. That industry view points to coexistence, not a universal wireless migration path.

What should a plant assess before choosing a network?
Start with the job the network must do, then compare candidate approaches against the existing plant and its operating constraints:
- Control requirements: Establish the required cycle time, determinism, latency and reliability for the application rather than assuming a technology name guarantees them.
- Asset movement and coverage: Note which devices are fixed or mobile, the physical area to cover and the radio conditions relevant to any wireless option.
- Interoperability: Check support across installed devices, vendors, profiles and network equipment—not just compatibility claims for one component.
- Security and ownership: Include segmentation, remote access and responsibility for operating the network in the design discussion. IT/OT convergence makes security part of the connectivity decision; no single protocol name supplies a complete security architecture.
- Migration and purpose: Account for compatibility and migration cost, and distinguish traffic intended for control from monitoring, analytics or high-volume media.
These criteria help frame a site-specific evaluation; they are not a published scoring system. The sources do not provide a universal rubric for ranking wired Ethernet, TSN, OPC UA, SPE, Wi-Fi and private 5G.

What is established—and what remains a direction?
The clearest evidence of future change is a set of parallel industry and standards efforts. The Industrial Ethernet Book’s 2025 report describes a changing connectivity landscape that includes security, IT/OT convergence, TSN, wireless and SPE. The OPC Foundation’s FLC work sets out a standards-development goal for field-level communication and a common multi-vendor infrastructure. NIST’s 2026 technical note examines both the promise and adoption and performance challenges of software-based private 5G.
These sources support an outlook of more connected, potentially more converged industrial networks. They do not establish a universal deployment schedule, market-share outcome, head-to-head performance winner or wholesale replacement of fieldbus and existing Ethernet systems. Omdia’s public listing for its Industrial Communications Report – 2025 Analysis names Ethernet, 5G, TSN, SPE and network components such as switches, but the detailed report is subscription-only and its public description does not expose adoption figures.
