Yes. A 2023 report describes benzoyldiisopropylchlorosilane, a silicon-based protecting group for alcohols that researchers removed with blue visible light. Its reported scope includes primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols, but the method requires methanol and should be understood as a laboratory research result—not as a commercially available or routine-use reagent.
What the protecting group does
Protecting groups temporarily mask a reactive part of a molecule so a chemist can modify another part without the alcohol interfering. Silyl groups are commonly used to protect alcohols. In the design reported by Armido Studer’s group at the University of Münster, an acyl silane motif gives the protected alcohol a route for photochemical removal: the group decomposes under blue light.
The report describes compatibility with primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols, and says the group can be used alongside other protecting groups. These are demonstrated classes and a qualitative compatibility claim, not evidence that every alcohol or combination of groups will work.
Why use blue light instead of UV?
The main comparison is with the earlier sisyl protecting group, which is removed using ultraviolet light. The report presents blue visible light as an advantage because UV can also cleave bonds a chemist intends to keep intact. Petr Klán, an organic chemist at Masaryk University, called visible light “a major advantage” in this context.

That comparison concerns the light used for cleavage; it does not establish that the new method is superior for every substrate or reaction. The right choice depends on the molecule, the other protecting groups present, and the reaction conditions.
What limits its use
Methanol is required
The reported deprotection requires methanol. That is a practical constraint for biomolecules or other applications that need water-based conditions; the source specifically identifies aqueous requirements as a limitation.

Compatibility needs to be checked for each case
The article reports several alcohol classes and high orthogonality relative to other protecting groups, but does not provide a complete compatibility matrix. Chemists considering the method need to assess solvent tolerance, the molecule’s other functional groups and protecting groups, and the specific conditions in the original study.

It is a research report, not a product listing
