OEO means “On-Earth Orbit,” but it is not a real orbit or satellite system. It is the fictional premise of Electronic Design’s April 1, 2026 humor article, “A New Kind of Geosynchronous Orbit.” The piece jokes that satellites could remain synchronized with communities while traveling over Earth’s surface, then extends the gag with “Rare-Earth Orbit,” subterranean “Middle-Earth Orbits,” and “Flat-Earth Orbit.”

What does OEO mean in this article?

OEO stands for “On-Earth Orbit.” Electronic Design uses it as satire, not as the name of a proposed or demonstrated orbital regime. The article’s own section heading, “More April 1st Humor,” makes the joke explicit. Its pitch is that a satellite could stay synchronized with the community it serves while moving along the ground rather than orbiting Earth.

Jim Handy, General Director of Objective Analysis, described the premise this way: “The OEO satellite promises a geosynchronous orbit around the equator, low latency, and a drastic cut in costs—using readily available technology.” In context, that is part of the humor, not a technical claim about a working system. How does the OEO joke compare with real GEO?

Geosynchronous orbit is real. NASA’s account of communications satellites describes the engineering history behind making such spacecraft practical, including the ADVENT program, launch vehicles, stabilization, and antennas designed to point toward Earth. A geosynchronous satellite has an orbital period matching Earth’s rotation; when its orbit is circular and aligned with the equator, it appears nearly fixed over one point on Earth. NASA’s history of communications satellites provides the factual background.

Electronic Design says conventional GEO satellites must be about 35,786 kilometers (22,236 miles) above Earth’s surface and travel about 11,052 km/h (6,867 mph) to remain useful over the equator. It contrasts those figures with its fictional OEO premise: about 1,670 km/h (1,040 mph) at the equator, slowing farther north. Those OEO figures belong to the article’s joke setup; they are not measurements of an actual satellite technology.

Comparison Real GEO OEO in the April 1 article
Reality status Established satellite orbit used for communications; NASA documents its engineering history. Fictional satire; no real OEO spacecraft or operator is identified.
Altitude and speed Electronic Design gives about 35,786 km (22,236 mi) above Earth and 11,052 km/h (6,867 mph) at the equator. Electronic Design’s joke premise gives about 1,670 km/h (1,040 mph) at the equator, slowing farther north; this is not a real system specification.
Latency rationale GEO spacecraft are far from Earth, so the distance is relevant to signal travel time. The article jokes that proximity would remove latency; this is not evidence of an OEO network.
Power, cooling, and radiation Real spacecraft require engineering for their operating environment. The article jokes about local terrestrial power, atmospheric cooling, SSDs instead of heavier HDDs, and avoiding space-radiation data upsets.
Named technology NASA describes real communications-satellite programs; Astranis uses the term microGEO for actual smaller spacecraft operating in GEO. No OEO vehicle, service, or operator is named.

Why the OEO claims are not practical engineering guidance

The article attributes several apparent benefits to its fictional concept: lower latency from proximity, cheaper deployment, access to local terrestrial power, easier cooling through Earth’s atmosphere, lighter SSD storage, and fewer radiation-related data upsets. These points function as parts of the April 1 joke, not as evidence that an on-ground system can orbit Earth or deliver satellite service.

That distinction matters because the pitch borrows real engineering language—synchronization, latency, storage, power, and radiation—to make the premise sound plausible at a glance. The article does not identify a spacecraft, operator, mission, or demonstrated service. Treat its advantages as satire rather than as a comparison for selecting a communications system.

Is microGEO the same thing as OEO?

No. Astranis’s microGEO is a real commercial engineering term for smaller spacecraft that operate in geosynchronous orbit. “Micro” describes the spacecraft approach; it does not mean the satellite is on Earth. Astranis distinguishes the real concept from the fictional OEO premise. See Astranis’s explanation of microGEO.

What are REO, subterranean MEO/HOBBIT, and FEO?

They are additional jokes in Electronic Design’s “More April 1st Humor” section:

  • REO means “Rare-Earth Orbit,” a pun rather than a real orbit category.
  • Subterranean MEO/HOBBIT extends the joke underground.
  • FEO means “Flat-Earth Orbit,” another satire name, not an orbital regime.

These labels should not be confused with actual orbit terminology. MEO and LEO are established names for medium Earth orbit and low Earth orbit; OEO, REO, HOBBIT, and FEO are the article’s comic inventions.
