You can assemble a useful technical SEO audit workflow without paying for an all-in-one suite: use a crawler for URL-level checks, then add a hosted audit for verified-site monitoring and data. The free options have meaningful limits, and this stack is not a proven replacement for every feature in a paid platform.
Build the audit from tools with distinct jobs
A technical SEO audit is more useful when you know what each tool is measuring. A desktop crawler inspects pages and site structure; a hosted audit can repeatedly check a verified site and organize detected issues; search-performance and backlink data answer different questions. An audit score from a vendor is not the same thing as first-party search data, and none of these tools alone explains every cause of a problem.
- Page and crawl inspection: use a crawler when you need to examine URLs, links, and technical elements across a site.
- Ongoing issue tracking: use a hosted audit when you want a dashboard to crawl an owned site and group issues for follow-up.
- Broader SEO visibility: use search and backlink data as context, not as a substitute for technical inspection.
Use Screaming Frog for a hands-on crawl
Screaming Frog SEO Spider is a desktop crawler. Its official pricing and feature page says the free version is limited to 500 URLs. That can be enough for a small site or a focused crawl; the limit matters if the site exceeds 500 URLs or you need to inspect a broader set at once.
The same vendor page says a paid license removes the crawl limit and unlocks advanced features. It lists integrations including Google Search Console and features such as hreflang auditing. The cited page does not establish a current price here, so compare its live licensing terms against your needs rather than assuming a particular monthly cost.
Add an owned-site audit if you need a hosted view
Ahrefs offers free Site Audit access for verified websites. Its Help Center article, published September 3, 2026, states that the allowance is 5,000 crawl credits per month per project. Check eligibility and the credit limit before relying on it for a large or frequently crawled site; credits are not the same as a guaranteed count of pages in every crawl.
Ahrefs Webmaster Tools describes free analytics, technical auditing, and SEO metrics for verified sites. The product also provides limited Site Explorer access for information such as organic traffic and backlink profiles. These are useful additions for an owned-site workflow, but do not make the free account equivalent to every capability of a paid SEO suite. See Ahrefs Webmaster Tools and the dated Ahrefs Help Center explanation of free access for the current scope and terms.

Know what the hosted audit can and cannot tell you
Ahrefs says its free hosted audit can identify more than 170 common SEO issues, show affected URLs, group issues by importance, explain them, and provide monitoring. That figure and feature description are Ahrefs’ product claims, not an independent finding that every issue is detected correctly or that every flagged item requires a fix. Use the URL examples and explanations to investigate, then decide whether the issue matters for your site.
A hosted report is a queue for investigation, not a verdict on ranking impact. Review the affected pages and distinguish a genuine technical obstacle from a recommendation that is low priority or irrelevant to the site’s implementation.

Choose the setup by site size and audit cadence
| Need | Starting point | Boundary to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional crawl of a site with up to 500 URLs | Screaming Frog SEO Spider free version | The vendor’s free crawl limit is 500 URLs; larger crawls and advanced features require a paid license. |
| Hosted technical audit of an owned site | Ahrefs free Site Audit / Webmaster Tools | Site ownership must be verified; Ahrefs states a limit of 5,000 crawl credits per month per project. |
| More than 500 URLs or advanced desktop-crawler features | Consider a Screaming Frog paid license | The vendor says the license removes the crawl limit and unlocks advanced features; confirm current pricing and the features you need. |
| Complete replacement for a paid SEO suite | Not established by these free-tool limits and features | The evidence supports a cost-conscious technical audit workflow, not feature parity across all suite functions. |
For a small site and occasional checks, begin with the desktop crawler and add the hosted audit only if a persistent dashboard is useful. If you manage a larger site or want more frequent crawls, compare the actual crawl allowance and feature limits with your audit schedule before upgrading. A free limit that works for a one-off review may not suit ongoing monitoring.
Turn findings into a manageable audit
- Establish crawl scope. Decide which site and URL set you need to inspect. For the free Screaming Frog version, keep the 500-URL ceiling in view.
- Run the crawler and inspect affected URLs. Treat reported issues as leads; check representative pages and confirm the technical condition before prioritizing work.
- Verify the site for hosted auditing. Ahrefs’ free Site Audit applies to verified websites, with 5,000 crawl credits per month per project according to its September 3, 2026 Help Center article.
- Separate findings by purpose. Keep crawl and technical issues distinct from traffic, ranking, or backlink questions; those datasets do not answer the same question.
- Upgrade only for a specific constraint. A crawl-size ceiling, missing advanced feature, or need for recurring monitoring is a clearer reason to pay than a generic desire for a higher audit score.
When this setup is not enough
This stack is aimed at technical checks on a site you can crawl or verify. It does not establish full parity with a paid all-in-one platform, nor does it provide a single source for every SEO workflow. If a project depends on features beyond the stated free limits, confirm those features and current prices with the vendors before choosing a paid plan. No physical product is required for this workflow.
