I thought I’d have found my next role by now. When a search keeps going past the point you expected, the waiting can start to feel like evidence that you are falling behind or doing something wrong. It isn’t evidence of either. One developer’s account captures the uncertainty of a search that lasted about eight to nine months, but no one person’s timeline sets a rule for everyone.

When the search lasts longer than you expected

Software developer Bipin Katuwal described losing a junior frontend developer role and then searching for about eight to nine months. In his account, the prolonged search brought pressure, rejection, fading confidence, guilt about unproductive days, and worry that changing technology would leave him behind. That is one person’s experience, not a forecast for yours.

The hardest part can be the mismatch between the timeline you imagined and the one you are living. A job search is not a reliable measure of your ability, effort, or value. Hiring depends on many factors, including fit, timing, and employer decisions; a rejection does not tell you everything about why an application did not move forward.

What the unemployment numbers can—and cannot—tell you

For U.S. context, the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ July 2026 Employment Situation release put the mean duration of unemployment at 24.9 weeks and the median at 10.5 weeks among people still unemployed. These describe ongoing spells, not the length of searches that have ended. The mean can be pulled upward by longer spells; the median means half of those still unemployed had been looking longer and half for less time. Neither figure predicts how long one person’s search will take, and neither is specific to software workers. BLS, July 2026 Employment Situation.

The BLS July 2026 JOLTS release reported 7.3 million U.S. job openings and 5.1 million hires. Those broad monthly totals describe employer activity, not jobs matched to a particular person’s skills, seniority, location, or work authorization. They cannot explain an individual search on their own. BLS, July 2026 JOLTS.

Separate job-search activity from self-worth

The BLS uses a specific statistical definition: “People are classified as unemployed if they do not have a job, have actively looked for work in the prior 4 weeks, and are currently available for work.” Its examples of active search include contacting employers, employment agencies, friends or relatives, and submitting resumes or applications. This definition is for measuring labor-market status; it is not a moral standard or a score for how hard someone is trying. BLS, How the Government Measures Unemployment.

A difficult week does not erase what you have already done, and rest is not proof that you lack commitment. If guilt is making it hard to restart, choose one manageable action—such as reviewing one application or contacting one person—rather than demanding that every day look maximally productive.

Concern about technology changing while you search is understandable, especially in software. You do not need to master every new tool to prove you belong in the field. If refreshing a skill would help your confidence or fit a role you are targeting, make it a bounded goal alongside the search—not a condition you must satisfy before you are allowed to apply.

Make room for an unfinished answer

Katuwal’s account does not end with a tidy promise that persistence guarantees a job. He writes, “I don’t know when this phase will end” and “I don’t know what the next job will look like.” It is possible to acknowledge that uncertainty without turning it into a verdict. You can take the next concrete step while not knowing the whole route.
