A 2014 report described bisguaiacol-F (BGF), a proposed BPA-like polymer building block made from compounds derived from lignin, a by-product of paper production. The reported work found mechanical properties similar to BPA and no observed endocrine-disrupting effects in its tests. Those findings are early research, not proof that BGF is broadly safe or a commercially available consumer substitute.
What is the paper-industry leftover?
The starting material is lignin, a complex component of plant cell walls that remains as a by-product of pulp and paper processing. BGF is not lignin itself: it is a distinct chemical proposed as a feedstock for making polymers.
Chemistry World reported in 2014 that more than 70 million tonnes of lignin were produced annually as a paper-industry by-product, with most then incinerated. That is a historical estimate attributed to the project presentation, not a current production figure.

The reported route used two lignin breakdown products, vanilyl alcohol and guaiacol, to synthesize bisguaiacol-F. The 2014 account described two isomers and said they could be used to make polymers. The basic idea was to convert material otherwise treated as waste into a renewable source of chemical building blocks.

Kaleigh Reno, identified in the 2014 Chemistry World report as a PhD student who worked on the project, said: “We wanted to use a renewable feedstock to make monomers, and focus on natural resources,”
What did the reported research establish about performance and safety?
Chemistry World’s 2014 coverage said BGF had mechanical properties similar to BPA and that the reported work did not show endocrine-disrupting effects. These are findings attributed to that research, not a complete evaluation of BGF’s effects on human health or the environment. Similar mechanical properties also do not establish that BGF can replace BPA in every material or application.

“BPA substitute” describes a proposed function, not a safety verdict. In a separate assessment of alternatives to BPA in thermal paper, the US Environmental Protection Agency emphasized that alternatives can involve hazard trade-offs and that inclusion in the assessment is not an EPA endorsement. That assessment concerns thermal-paper alternatives; it does not validate BGF or establish it as a receipt-paper ingredient.
Is BGF the same as a BPA-free receipt-paper alternative?
No. The reported BGF work concerns a polymer building block. Thermal receipt paper uses chemical developers to produce an image when heated. An EU Publications Office record for a 2020 report covers BPA, BPS and other developers used in EU thermal paper during 2014–2019, including the period before and after the restriction took effect on 2 January 2020. That regulatory and market context is separate from the BGF research.

So a lignin-derived polymer feedstock and a thermal-paper developer are not interchangeable categories. The reviewed sources do not show that BGF was developed or adopted as a thermal-paper replacement.

No. Later work shows continuing interest in lignin, but it does not establish that BGF itself has reached consumers. Stockholm University reported in 2024 on separate research using lignin in work aimed at replacing BPA and generating an alternative to cotton; it should not be conflated with the BGF chemistry reported in 2014.

The EU’s Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking lists LIGNOFUN as an in-progress demonstration project running from 1 June 2025 to 31 May 2029. It uses pulp-and-paper black liquor and sidestreams as feedstock and aims to develop lignin-derived ingredients for applications such as foams, adhesives, coatings, composites, wood panels, cosmetics, personal-care products and rubber products. These are project aims, not evidence that BGF is in those products or that the planned outputs are already widely marketed.

The sources reviewed establish BGF as a research proposal and document broader lignin-valorization activity. They do not identify a consumer-ready BGF product or demonstrate current commercial availability.
