A health check can take healthy AI servers out of service if it confuses a temporary inability to serve with a condition that requires a restart. In Kubernetes, a failed liveness probe can restart a container; a failed readiness probe removes its Pod from Service traffic without stopping it. A startup probe can protect both decisions while a model initializes. The title does not identify the implementation or incident, so the mechanisms below are possible explanations—not a verified postmortem.
How a health check can make healthy servers unavailable
The risk comes from giving a probe the wrong job. Kubernetes distinguishes three probe types by the action they control: liveness asks whether a container should be restarted, readiness asks whether it should receive traffic, and startup gives a slow-starting application time to initialize before the other probes take effect. Kubernetes documents the probe behaviors and configuration.
- Liveness failure: Kubernetes treats the container as needing a restart after the configured failure threshold is reached. A process can be healthy in the sense of still running, yet be restarted because its health endpoint is slow, overloaded, or reporting a temporary condition.
- Readiness failure: The container remains running, but Kubernetes Services stop sending it traffic while it is not ready. This is traffic removal, not a restart.
- Startup probe: It delays liveness and readiness checks until startup succeeds. This is useful when initialization takes longer than the ordinary probe budget.
A liveness probe that tests whether every dependency is available can turn a dependency outage into a restart storm. Restarting each affected container may not repair a database or network problem; it can instead add recovery work while taking more serving capacity away.
Why AI model servers need startup protection
AI inference servers may need to download model files, load weights into memory, initialize accelerators, or complete other work before they can serve requests. If liveness begins too early or its allowed startup window is too short, a server can be restarted while it is still making progress. Repeated restarts may repeat the expensive initialization and delay recovery.

Google’s GKE Inference Gateway tutorial for vLLM illustrates this trade-off. Its example uses a startup probe with a window of up to 600 one-second failures (ten minutes), and notes that a liveness-triggered restart reloads the large model. The tutorial’s example configuration uses five consecutive liveness failures and one readiness failure, with one-second periods and timeouts for both. Those are values for that sample deployment—not universal defaults or a prescription for another model server.
Set the startup budget to fit the real initialization path, including the slow cases you expect to tolerate. A probe configuration that works for a small, cached model may be too aggressive for a larger model or a cold start.

Keep restart decisions separate from traffic decisions
Use readiness to answer, “Can this instance serve requests now?” Use liveness to answer, “Is this process stuck in a state that a restart can fix?” That separation lets a server remain alive while it recovers from a temporary condition, without sending it new traffic. A readiness endpoint should reflect the server’s ability to serve, but its failure should not automatically be treated as proof that the process must restart.
Be especially cautious about remote dependencies. AWS advises against making liveness depend on systems outside the Pod, such as a database. It also warns that readiness checks tied to external connectivity can make all Pods fail readiness; that can cause an outage and potentially cascading failures in services that depend on those Pods. See AWS guidance on probes and load balancer health checks.

- Adjustable Depth: 23-40'' adjustable depth is used for servers and network equipment, ensuring enough space for AV equipment, components, and cabling, while allowing you to access ports and equipment from multiple sides.
- Strong Load Capacity: Ground-Mounted Load Capacity: 500 lbs, Wall-Mounted Load Capacity: 150 lbs. The av rack is made of carbon steel for better weldability performance and can help save space while meeting your need to place multiple devices.
- User-friendly Design: Ergonomic design makes the open frame av rack easier to use. The additional top panel is able to place other items with more available space. Roller design moves anywhere and anytime, is convenient, and is more energy-saving.
- Complete Accessories: We provide the accessories you need, including 2 x Pallets, 145 x M5*10 Cross Head Screws, 4 x Casters, 4 x M10*50 Expansion Screws,10 x M6*12 Cage Nuts, 1 x Grounding Wire, 1 x User Manual.
- Wide Application: The server rack wall mount maximizes the use of available space, suitable for retail venues, classrooms, offices, and other places where space is limited.
A dependency can matter to whether a particular request can succeed, but that does not by itself mean restarting the model server is the right recovery action. Choose which layer owns the dependency check and what action follows its failure, rather than making a remote outage look like a local process failure.
Diagnose what actually failed before changing thresholds
- Check Pod events and restart counts. Determine whether Kubernetes recorded a liveness, readiness, or startup probe failure, or whether another component such as a load balancer marked the instance unhealthy. The probe type and configured thresholds determine whether the result is restart or traffic removal.
- Inspect the health endpoint. Establish what it checks, how much work it performs, and whether it calls a remote service. A slow or dependency-sensitive endpoint can fail even when the model process itself is not deadlocked.
- Compare response time with the probe budget. Look at endpoint latency under model load against the configured timeout and frequency. Check whether the startup window covers model download and accelerator initialization in the slowest relevant startup conditions.
- Identify the failed action. If the container restarted, investigate liveness or startup configuration and whether the process was actually unrecoverable. If it stayed running but stopped receiving traffic, investigate readiness and routing behavior.
- Change one decision at a time. Correct endpoint semantics first; then tune timeout, period, and success or failure thresholds to measured behavior. Confirm that a liveness failure represents a state a restart can plausibly fix.
Choose probe settings for the workload, not by copying an example
Probe settings are operational policy, not constants that apply to every cluster. Evaluate the action on failure, what state the endpoint measures, how sensitive the thresholds are, how startup is protected, and the cost of recovery. In particular, a restart that reloads a large model has a different cost from restarting a lightweight stateless process.

The Kubernetes documentation cautions that “Incorrect implementation of liveness probes can lead to cascading failures.” That is why the safest configuration is not simply the most aggressive one: it is one that detects genuine unrecoverable process states without treating slow initialization or an external dependency outage as a reason to restart every instance.
The supplied title does not establish which orchestrator, endpoint, probe fields, dependency, timeline, or logs were involved. Without those details, it is not possible to name the exact cause; the first diagnostic step is to establish whether the event was a restart, readiness-based traffic removal, startup failure, or a separate routing decision.
