Yes—an old Pixel 4a can work very well as an iPod-style music player. It has a built-in 3.5 mm headphone jack, 128 GB of advertised internal storage, Bluetooth 5.0, and Android support for local-music apps. A 100 GB library can fit in principle, but the formatted capacity is lower than 128 GB and the phone already uses some space. Treat this as a storage check, not a guaranteed track-count or playback-time promise.
Why the Pixel 4a makes a practical iPod replacement
The Pixel 4a’s hardware matches the basics of a dedicated local music player without needing an adapter. Google lists 128 GB of internal storage, a standard 3.5 mm audio jack, stereo speakers, Bluetooth 5.0 with A2DP, Android 10, and a 3,140 mAh battery in the specification for the phone.
Google measures the advertised storage before formatting, so Android, preinstalled software, downloaded artwork and your music app reduce the space available for songs. The phone also uses a non-removable battery, which matters more for a 2020-era handset than the headline capacity does.

It may, but only if the phone has at least 100 GB of usable free space after setup. The 128 GB label does not mean that all 128 GB can hold music. There is no official controlled track-count figure for a Pixel 4a and no guaranteed local-music runtime figure, because both depend on file formats, metadata, the player app and the individual phone’s condition.

Check the actual space instead of estimating
- Back up anything you still need from the phone.
- If you want the cleanest music-only setup, factory-reset the Pixel 4a and complete Android setup without restoring unnecessary apps or media.
- Install the local music player you intend to use.
- Open Settings > Storage and note the available space.
- Copy the music library in stages, then check free space again before transferring the remainder.
Leave room for Android updates, album artwork, playlists and temporary files. If the library does not fit, remove duplicate files, use smaller lossless or lossy files where acceptable, or keep part of the collection elsewhere.
Wired headphones: no USB-C dongle required
The Pixel 4a includes a conventional 3.5 mm audio jack. Standard wired headphones and earbuds plug directly into the phone, so a USB-C-to-headphone adapter is not needed. This is one of the clearest advantages over newer phones that removed the jack.

For a simple iPod-like setup, wired headphones avoid Bluetooth pairing, charging a second device and potential wireless connection problems. Bluetooth 5.0 and A2DP are available when you prefer wireless headphones, but those headphones still need their own battery.
Battery reality on an aging Pixel 4a
The specification lists a 3,140 mAh battery. Google’s launch announcement described the battery as lasting all day, but that was a launch-era claim rather than a modern, controlled test of continuous local playback. A used Pixel 4a may deliver substantially different results depending on battery wear, screen use, volume, wireless radios and the music app.

How to make playback last longer
- Use downloaded files instead of streaming.
- Turn off mobile data, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when they are not needed.
- Keep the screen off during playback.
- Reduce notification and background-app activity.
- Check the phone’s battery condition and replace the battery if its runtime is no longer practical.
There is no reliable official number of continuous hours for local playback on a current, aging Pixel 4a, so measure your own handset if runtime is important.
Software and maintenance trade-offs
Android makes file transfer and library management familiar, and the phone can run a local music app rather than a streaming service. However, Google’s specification says Pixel devices receive Android version updates for at least three years from first availability on the Google Store in the United States. That minimum window is limited compared with a newly purchased phone, and the Pixel 4a is no longer a current model.

App compatibility is also not guaranteed indefinitely. Check that the specific player you want to use still installs on your phone’s Android version, and keep an installer or backup of your music library so the device remains useful if an app changes requirements.

The Pixel 4a is especially attractive if you already own it, want a headphone jack and prefer not to buy another device. A dedicated player can be a better choice when you need a fresh battery, expandable storage or a longer software-support horizon.

A clean setup for an iPod-style Pixel 4a
- Back up photos, messages and other personal data.
- Factory-reset the phone if it will be used only for music, or uninstall unused apps if you are keeping your existing setup.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and install a local music player that supports your file formats.
- Use Settings > Storage to record the free space after setup.
- Transfer the library by USB, then let the player scan its folders.
- Test several albums with the screen off, first through the 3.5 mm jack and then over Bluetooth if needed.
- Recheck storage and battery behavior after the full library is indexed.
What the Pixel 4a cannot promise
- A 100 GB collection will fit on every Pixel 4a: formatted capacity and existing data differ by phone.
- A fixed number of tracks: file size and metadata vary.
- A fixed number of local-playback hours: battery health and listening conditions vary.
- Future compatibility with every music app: support depends on the app’s Android requirements.
In practical terms, confirm three things on your handset: formatted free space, the chosen player’s compatibility and real battery runtime. If all three are acceptable, the Pixel 4a is a capable, inexpensive local music player with the rare convenience of a built-in headphone jack.
