Greener fabric finishing means choosing a process that achieves the required hand, appearance, or performance with less water, chemical use, energy, pollution, or waste. There is no proven single best technology for every fabric or mill: compare options against the same finished-fabric requirements and account for the whole process, including drying, wastewater treatment, and residuals.

What fabric finishing involves

Fabric finishing is an industrial textile stage that removes unfixed dyes or gives fabric its final handle or performance properties. It is distinct from consumer laundry care and from upstream fiber production. Because a finish must deliver a defined result, an environmental comparison is meaningful only when the alternatives achieve comparable fabric performance. Kering Standards v8 describes finishing in these terms.

Finishing also sits within a connected wet-processing chain. The European Commission’s textile-industry reference covers pretreatment, dyeing, printing, and finishing across natural and man-made fibers, including blends. A change at the finishing stage can therefore affect water, chemical, energy, emissions, and wastewater management elsewhere in the mill. The Commission’s Joint Research Centre overview describes that broader process scope.

Which greener finishing approaches can mills investigate?

Kering Standards v8 calls its list of innovative processing techniques “indicative and non-exhaustive” and presents it as a starting point for further investigation—not proof that each option works for every fabric or reduces impacts by a comparable amount. Candidate approaches include:

  • Reusable up to four years: our dryer balls will last over a thousand loads, allowing you to save money on dryer sheets and fabric softeners. SnugPad wool balls can be used on any load white, colored, and dark clothes, towels, sheets, and more.
  • Save electricity: your appliance usage will shrink as you see your clothes dry up to 25% faster. Re-usable- lasts over 1, 000 loads, equal to 4 Large boxes of dryer sheets.
  • Alternative application or processing methods: digital spray, foam, ultrasonic, laser, ozone, and plasma technologies.
  • Enzyme-catalyzed finishing: an option to assess for compatible processes and materials.
  • Alternative chemistries: bio-based antimicrobial treatments and bio-based durable water- or oil-repellents described by the standard as PFAS-free.

These are candidates, not guaranteed substitutes. The cited material does not establish identical performance or comparable lifecycle savings for each technique. A mill should establish whether the process suits the fiber, color, target finish, production volume, and installed equipment before treating it as an improvement.

Kering describes its position this way: “Kering promotes the development and adoption of advanced techniques and innovative technologies that enable waterless or dry processing, significant resource savings, and cleaner production with substantial reductions in chemical use and pollution.” This is Kering’s stated position in the “Innovative textile processing solutions” section of Kering Standards v8, not an independent head-to-head finding.

How can a mill reduce water and chemical use?

Recirculate suitable streams

Kering encourages suppliers to work toward closed-loop water and chemical systems. Possible measures include recovering and reusing chemicals or solvents, reusing selected water streams, and applying reverse osmosis after wastewater treatment to recirculate water. These options need to be evaluated for the mill’s specific streams, treatment system, and process requirements.

Kering states that reverse osmosis, when combined with suitable accessories and management adjustments, may enable reuse of “up to 90% of water.” That is a source-stated potential, not a universal or independently verified result for mills generally. Kering Standards v8 is the source for this qualified figure.

Track the full process, not only the finishing bath

Assess chemical and water inputs alongside the energy used in associated drying or curing. Include wastewater pollutants and treatment, air emissions, chemical recovery, and residuals in the assessment. A process that reduces one input may shift burdens elsewhere; checking the full system boundary helps reveal that trade-off.

How should finishing options be compared?

Set the target fabric result first, then compare process routes using consistent boundaries and a defined unit of production, such as a quantity of fabric. Record actual site data where possible and note measurement methods, operating conditions, and whether a result comes from a trial or routine production. The following checks reflect relevant process and management dimensions in the industrial guidance; they are not a published scoring system.

  • Finished-fabric result: Does the process meet the required hand, appearance, and measured performance?
  • Inputs: What water and chemicals are used per unit of fabric?
  • Energy: What energy is used for finishing and related drying or curing?
  • Pollution: What air emissions and wastewater pollutants are produced, and how are they treated?
  • Recovery and residuals: Which chemicals or solvents can be recovered, and what residuals remain?
  • Practical fit: Is the route compatible with the fiber, color, production volume, and available equipment?
  • Evidence and rules: How strong is the performance evidence, and what requirements apply at the facility?

The available industrial sources do not provide a reliable independent statistic ranking how much each listed technology reduces impact across comparable fabric applications. Treat claims as specific to their evidence and operating conditions rather than assuming a universal winner. The European Commission’s textiles BREF overview and Kering’s processing standard support process-level evaluation, not a cross-technology ranking.

Which rules and labels apply to mill finishing?

Industrial requirements depend on location and facility

Use the permits, applicable best available techniques (BAT), and local requirements that govern the particular site. The EU Publications Office record describes the BAT scope as textile pretreatment or dyeing installations with treatment capacity exceeding 10 tonnes per day under the specified Industrial Emissions Directive category. That threshold belongs to that defined EU scope; it is not a worldwide limit for every finishing operation. The EU BAT reference record gives the scope, while the Commission’s BREF overview lists publication in January 2023 and BAT Conclusions in December 2022.

As a jurisdiction-specific example, UK process guidance note 6/08 is statutory guidance for regulators assessing permit applications for textile and fabric coating and finishing in the stated local-authority pollution-prevention regime. The government page says it covers air-emission limits, monitoring methods, and techniques to control air emissions; it was published on 1 June 2014. Check current local requirements rather than relying on this older guidance for compliance advice. UK Government: process guidance note 6/08.

Product labels do not certify every mill process

The EU Ecolabel criteria apply to textile products including clothing, interior textiles, fibers, yarn, fabric, and knitted panels. The Commission says the criteria address more sustainable fiber production, less-polluting production, restrictions on hazardous substances, and long-lasting products. Its page lists the criteria as valid through 31 December 2028 and notes an ongoing revision. A product label can support a product-level claim within its scope; it does not prove that an unexamined mill or finishing technique has zero impact. EU Ecolabel clothing and textiles criteria.

Green Seal GS-51 is a different category: it covers certain industrial and institutional laundry-care products, including fabric starch, sizing, and finish products and certain softeners. It explicitly excludes laundry facilities and the equipment or processes used there, so a laundry-product certification is not evidence that mill-scale fabric manufacturing is greener. Green Seal identifies Edition 1.8, issued 23 June 2022, with clarifications or corrections last made 3 April 2026. Green Seal GS-51 scope and edition information.
