A survey ahead of an underwater gas pipeline project uncovered a previously unknown shipwreck in Germany’s Bay of Greifswald. Tree-ring analysis places the felling of one timber between 1626 and 1639, pointing to a 17th-century vessel—but not revealing exactly when it was built or sank.
How a pipeline survey led to the discovery
In 2023, divers investigating seabed anomalies in the Bay of Greifswald, a sheltered lagoon on Germany’s Baltic coast, found shoe soles, pulley blocks and an anchor. Those objects led them to a shipwreck about 7.5 metres below the surface, embedded in soft silt. The discovery was made during preparations for an underwater gas pipeline.
With dredging imminent, five archaeologists documented and recovered material during 22 dives over just more than 12 days. The pipeline was rerouted, and the wreck remains were covered with sandbags.

What the remains reveal about the vessel
The surviving hull is fragmentary: a section of outer planking about 7.5 metres long, along with loose frames and other timbers. The planks overlap in a construction style known as clinker-built. Iron nails fastened the planks, while tar and animal hair sealed the gaps.

More than 60 objects were documented. Reported finds include wooden stocks, rope, barrel staves, animal bones, two shoe soles and a stitched leather strap. The team also found carpentry tools, including a hand-drill handle. Those tools may indicate the capacity to carry out repairs aboard, but they do not establish what work was done on this particular vessel.
A hollowed oak trunk was interpreted as a possible bilge pump. Another unusual object was a pierced clay brick held in a wooden block. Its proposed use as a sharpening tool remains tentative.

How old is the shipwreck?
Tree-ring analysis of one timber indicated that the tree used for it was felled between 1626 and 1639. That evidence supports a 17th-century date for the vessel. It does not give the precise year the ship was built or the date it sank: the timber could have been used after the tree was cut.
What archaeologists still do not know
The available findings do not identify the ship, its home port or its intended destination. Some timbers were charred, but fire is only one possible explanation for the sinking. Anchors and an associated buoy may suggest the vessel was anchored before it went down; they do not settle what happened.

The report suggests that additional wreck material may lie east of the find spot, an area that had not yet been searched in the reporting. Until more evidence is documented, the vessel’s identity and fate remain unresolved.
