If you want to retrieve things you copied after Windows’ built-in clipboard history has run out of room or been cleared, Ditto is a free option to consider. Its project documentation describes a clipboard manager that saves copied items for later, including text, images, HTML, and custom formats. The title’s “practically everything” is a flourish, not a guarantee: Ditto’s documentation does not promise to capture every format in every app.

Ditto is the likely app behind the original title, based on the project’s description; the title alone does not confirm the author’s specific setup. Here is how it differs from Windows clipboard history and how to retrieve an earlier copy.

What changes when you replace Windows clipboard history?

Windows already keeps a short clipboard history. Press Win+V to open it; if you have not used it before, select Turn on in the panel. Microsoft Support documents a maximum of 25 entries and a 4 MB limit per item. When the history fills, older unpinned items are removed to make room. Unpinned history is cleared when Windows restarts, while pinned items remain.

Ditto is a separate clipboard manager. Its README says it saves clipboard items for later access and supports text, images, HTML, and custom formats. Unlike Windows’ documented 25-entry history, the inspected Ditto README does not state a current retention limit. That means you should not read “practically everything” as unlimited storage or a promise that every copied item will be captured.

How to use Ditto to find an earlier copy

  1. Install and run Ditto. The project lists installer, portable, Chocolatey, winget, and Microsoft Store distribution routes. Check the project’s official links for current availability and packaging: Ditto README.
  2. Copy content as usual. Ditto’s documented purpose is to save items placed on the clipboard for later access.
  3. Open Ditto. Use its system-tray icon or the default Ctrl+back-quote hotkey.
  4. Select the item to reuse. Double-click it or press Enter. Ditto documents that this pastes the selected item into the window you were using before opening the manager.

Should you keep Windows sync or use a different manager?

Choose Windows sync if you want copies available on your other devices

Microsoft supports clipboard syncing across devices when clipboard history is enabled and the same Microsoft or work account is used. In Settings, enable clipboard history across devices, then choose manual or automatic sync. With sync enabled, copied text may be uploaded to the cloud. See Microsoft’s current instructions in Using the clipboard.

Consider ClipboardFusion if server syncing is important

ClipboardFusion’s official help documents configurable local history and says server syncing requires a Pro license. The inspected documentation does not establish further plan terms. Review the current ClipboardFusion Help before choosing it.

What to consider before saving a longer clipboard history

A longer history can be convenient, but copied items may include sensitive material such as passwords, private messages, or personal information. Ditto’s README says “No login,” “No cloud,” and “No telemetry”; those are the project’s own claims, not an independent security audit or proof that the software is risk-free. Windows sync has a different trade-off because synced text may be uploaded to the cloud. Choose the storage and sync behavior that fits the information you copy.
