A limestone tomb near ancient Mothis, in Egypt’s Dakhla Oasis, was built for a man named Pisechtes and his wife in the fourth century CE. A mud-brick shrine stood above its entrance and was likely erected after the couple’s burial, though the available report does not establish exactly when it was built or who used it.
Where the tomb was found and who it was for
The tomb is in the Dakhla Oasis near ancient Mothis, now Mut. Live Science’s report, published on 28 September 2026, dates it to the fourth century CE, during Roman rule of Egypt, and describes it as about 1,700 years old. That age is rounded rather than a precise measurement. The burial was made for Pisechtes and his wife; the report does not give her name. Pisechtes may have been a judge, but that identification is not certain. Live Science’s report
What was added above the entrance?
Fourteen steps descend to the tomb entrance. Its decoration includes a winged sun disk, Osiris and two cobras. Above the entrance stood a mud-brick shrine. Live Science reported the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities’ view that the shrine was likely erected after Pisechtes and his wife had been buried. That wording describes a probable sequence, not a confirmed date or explanation.

The reported information does not identify who built the shrine, why it was added, or whether a later occupant used the tomb. Later reuse is possible, but it is not established by the reported evidence. The ministry statement, as described in the article, also did not mention human remains; that omission does not establish whether remains were found. Live Science’s account of the entrance and shrine

What the Greek tomb poem says
A stone plaque in the tomb bears a 19-line funerary poem in ancient Greek. The reported lines praise Pisechtes for kindness and wisdom and call him an “advisor in life.” In the closing lines, his son Sarapion addresses his father and asks him to accept libations and offerings from his grieving children.
The report does not provide the full Greek inscription or a complete translation, so those details are the reported summary, not a full rendering of the poem. Angelos Chaniotis, whom Live Science identified as a researcher at the Institute for Advanced Study, told the publication by email that the inscription “is a highly literary and original epigram” with grammar similar to that of “Homer’s famous epics.” That is Chaniotis’s assessment, not a conclusion attributed to the excavation team. What is known—and what remains uncertain
The reported evidence identifies a fourth-century CE burial for Pisechtes and his wife, a Greek funerary poem, Egyptian hieroglyphic texts, and a mud-brick shrine above the entrance. The likely post-burial date of the shrine leaves open whether the tomb was reused, but the report does not name a later occupant or establish a reuse sequence. Live Science said it had contacted the archaeological team but had not received a response by publication; the report also does not provide the poem’s full text.
