A September 18, 1997 Yale Appliance showroom quote totaled $9,596.55 for a luxury kitchen. In a September 2026 comparison, Yale estimates that a package at a similar brand tier would cost about $32,000 today, while a commodity-brand package could cost about $8,000. Those are Yale’s estimates, not market-wide averages—and The Cool Down reports a separate estimate of about $35,000 from a Yale video.
The comparison is more nuanced than saying appliance prices have or have not kept pace with inflation. Yale says some selected products rose less than its stated 108% inflation comparison, while built-in luxury refrigeration and premium ovens cost substantially more. Product category and tier matter.
What was on the 1997 kitchen quote?
Yale Appliance’s September 11, 2026 article reproduces line items from a September 18, 1997 showroom quote. The seven listed items add up to $9,596.55:

What does Yale estimate a similar kitchen would cost now?
Yale’s September 2026 article puts a similar-brand-tier package at about $32,000 and a commodity-brand package at about $8,000. The Cool Down’s October 3, 2026 coverage of a Yale Appliance video gives a different current estimate: about $35,000. Keep the estimates distinct: the available reporting does not reconcile them, and neither establishes a representative market-wide average.
Yale frames the 29-year comparison against 108% inflation. That figure is Yale’s stated comparison, not an independently confirmed calculation here. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says its CPI inflation calculator uses the CPI-U U.S. city average, all items, not seasonally adjusted; its methodology description does not itself verify Yale’s specific 108% result.

Which appliance prices rose less—and which rose more?
Yale’s examples show why one overall kitchen total can hide sharply different changes. The figures below are Yale Appliance’s own comparisons, reported September 11, 2026; they are estimates from a retailer comparison rather than an independent price survey.

The Bosch figures need a qualification: the reproduced 1997 invoice lists a Bosch dishwasher with a black door frame kit at $789, while Yale’s separate comparison uses $760 as its 1997 figure. They are not the same stated number, so the comparison should not be mistaken for a precise restatement of that invoice line.

Why “defy inflation” does not mean every appliance got cheaper
Yale’s phrase “defy inflation” describes selected product comparisons, not every appliance or every brand. A Bosch dishwasher at one tier and a built-in Sub-Zero refrigerator at another are not interchangeable examples. Nor is a built-in luxury refrigerator automatically comparable to a counter-depth LG simply because the two may occupy a similar footprint; Yale itself cautions against treating them as equivalent.
Configuration also matters. The original quote includes a downdraft system and a trash compactor, which Yale says do not translate neatly into a present-day order. A modern kitchen’s comparable equipment may differ in product type, features, installation, or whether a close counterpart is still sold. Those differences make the package totals useful as a retailer’s illustration, not a like-for-like price index.

How to use the comparison when budgeting
Use the figures as context, not as a forecast for your own remodel. To compare current options fairly, first match the product class and installation type; a built-in refrigerator should be compared with another built-in model, not just a similarly sized freestanding or counter-depth unit.
- Match configuration: Compare the features and setup you actually need, including oven type, cooktop width, ventilation, and refrigerator format.
- Check whether a modern counterpart exists: The downdraft and compactor line items are examples of historic equipment that may not map cleanly onto a current order.
- Compare current prices for the specific products: The quoted current totals are Yale estimates, and appliance prices and availability can change.
- Separate brand tier from category: Yale’s approximately $8,000 commodity package and $32,000 similar-tier package are different purchasing scenarios, not two prices for an identical bill of materials.
Yale’s article attributes the historical quote and comparison to its showroom records and is by Steve Sheinkopf, whom it identifies as Yale Appliance’s third-generation CEO. That makes the source useful for understanding the retailer’s own comparison, while its commercial role and the absence of an independent market survey are reasons not to generalize its estimates to every seller or kitchen.

What the figures establish—and what they do not
The 1997 quote documents a luxury kitchen package at $9,596.55. Yale’s 2026 article estimates about $32,000 for a similar brand tier and about $8,000 for commodity brands; The Cool Down separately reports about $35,000 from a Yale video. Yale’s examples indicate very different price movements across appliances. They do not establish a single market-wide average, prove that all appliance prices beat inflation, or provide a definitive ranking of brands.
