An early Mario painting reportedly turned up in the garage of a former Nintendo advertising manager and was slated for display at New York Comic Con, according to a New York Times listing. The listing establishes those basic details, but not who made the painting, when it was created, or where and when it was shown.

What is known about the early Mario painting?

The New York Times listing describes an early Mario painting found in the garage of a former Nintendo advertising manager. It also says the work was to be displayed at New York Comic Con. The listing does not provide enough information to identify the finder or establish the painting’s precise subject, medium, creator, or date.

The exhibition reference is similarly limited: the listing does not specify the venue within the convention or the display dates. No chain of ownership is established by the available account.

How does the painting fit into Mario’s history?

The painting’s reported connection to Mario makes it an intriguing artifact, but its age and authorship are not established. Nintendo’s account of the character’s origins offers historical context without identifying this particular work: Shigeru Miyamoto created the hero of Donkey Kong, who was first called Jumpman and was later renamed Mario during the establishment of Nintendo of America’s headquarters. Nintendo’s history of Mario describes that progression.

Mario’s visual identity has changed dramatically since his earliest game appearance. In a Nintendo interview, Miyamoto recalled, “Certainly. The original Mario was a 16 X 16 pixellated image.” That specification refers to Mario’s original game design—not to the painting, whose date and creator remain unconfirmed. Nintendo’s Iwata Asks interview provides the comment.

What remains unconfirmed?

The New York Times search listing is the basis for the discovery and planned-display details. Without the article’s full account or confirmation from the convention or someone responsible for the artwork, the following points are not established:

  • The former employee’s name
  • Who painted the work and when
  • The painting’s exact subject and medium
  • How it came to be in the garage or its ownership history
  • The specific exhibition venue and display schedule at New York Comic Con

Those missing details matter: without them, the painting cannot be securely placed in a particular period of Nintendo or Mario history.
