In CauterRule v0.3.0, a semantic similarity floor of 0.80 was higher than the clean paraphrase score the author reported: 0.631. The result, according to Debashish Ghosal’s account, was a semantic matching channel that existed in the scoring blend but did not activate for the paraphrases it was meant to catch. The practical lesson is to examine scores for known-correct matches before choosing a threshold; a high, uncalibrated floor can quietly suppress true matches.
How could a semantic channel be present but fail to help?
Ghosal describes CauterRule’s matcher as combining three signals: token F1, bigram similarity, and MiniLM cosine similarity. The reported blend was 0.5·token-F1 + 0.3·bigram + 0.2·semantic, with the semantic contribution gated by a cosine floor of 0.80.
A floor is an activation condition: a cosine score below it contributes nothing through the gated semantic channel. In the article’s example, a short paraphrase had no shared tokens, and its clean signature scored 0.631. Since that score did not reach 0.80, the semantic term could not rescue the match. Even if it had reached the gate, the semantic component’s maximum contribution under the reported 0.2 weight was about 0.2, which Ghosal says was below the promotion thresholds in the described cases.
That distinction matters when diagnosing a matcher: a feature can be implemented and included in a formula without materially affecting decisions. If its inputs rarely pass the gate—or its possible contribution cannot move a verdict across a decision boundary—it may be functionally absent for the cases it was intended to address.

What scores and changes did Ghosal report?
In his September 15, 2026 article, Ghosal reports a clean-signature cosine of 0.631 and a class-label-included cosine of 0.547. He attributes some of the dilution to adding a failure_class label such as ci/lint to the embedded text. These are figures reported in the article, not independently reproduced measurements. The v0.3.1 changes he describes were:
- Lowering the semantic floor from 0.80 to 0.62.
- Comparing class-free and class-included signature views, then using the higher similarity.
- Representing a failure as a structured signature instead of embedding whole-trajectory prose.
Ghosal says the changes did not alter the model, prompt, or blend weights. Because several changes were made together, the article does not isolate how much each one contributed to the reported outcomes.

What happened to the reported evaluation results?
Ghosal reports the following golden-recall figures, labeling the paired groups “gpt / llama.” They are the article’s reported results, not statistics from an independently inspected underlying report.

The author describes the first group’s change, from 0.170 to 0.377, as nearly doubling. He also reports v0.3.1 golden pass rates of 82% [0.70, 0.89] and 83% [0.72, 0.91], each with n=60 and Wilson confidence intervals, and says these cleared a 70% gate. For v0.3.0, he gives a 30–50% pass rate based on n=10, without a confidence interval. The different sample sizes limit a direct comparison of those pass-rate figures.

Reference expansion is reported as 19/303 before and 201/303 and 198/303 after. Ghosal characterizes that as roughly tenfold. He cautions that adapters and raw/ci outcomes reflect multiple simultaneous changes, rather than attributing those outcomes to the threshold adjustment alone.
How should a similarity floor be calibrated?
Start with observed scores, not an intuition that a value such as 0.80 must be “high enough.” A useful calibration process separates examples the system should match from examples it should reject, then checks how candidate floors affect both groups.

- Build labeled examples. Collect known-correct paraphrase pairs and known non-matches representative of the corpus and task. Keep examples that expose relevant variation, such as whether class labels are present.
- Log raw scores before gating. Record cosine values for every pair, including examples that would be rejected by the current floor. Otherwise, the gate can hide the very score distribution needed to assess it.
- Compare positive and negative distributions. Examine where correct matches and non-matches fall, rather than treating one example as a universal cutoff. Look for overlap, since a single threshold may trade missed matches for false positives.
- Evaluate verdicts at candidate thresholds. Measure the effect on the decisions that matter, including recall and false-positive behavior. A similarity score alone does not show whether the blend and promotion rules produce acceptable outcomes.
- Validate on data not used to choose the floor. Keep a separate evaluation set where possible. Choosing and reporting a threshold on the same examples can make its performance look more reliable than it is.
- Recalibrate when the scoring setup changes. Corpus, embedding model, signature structure, and class-label handling can all affect score distributions. Recheck the floor when those inputs change.
Is 0.62 portable to other corpora or models?
The reported results do not establish that 0.62 is a generally suitable threshold. Ghosal frames the floor as calibrated on one corpus and model setup, and leaves open whether it should be set per corpus. A different corpus, embedding configuration, or signature representation may produce a different distribution for both true matches and non-matches.

The article also leaves unresolved how to recalibrate without contaminating the evaluation set. Its figures support a report about the described CauterRule changes; they do not establish a universal MiniLM cutoff or a reusable procedure that guarantees the same results elsewhere.

Did lowering the floor solve the whole matching problem?
Not necessarily. The account describes a lower floor alongside changes to signature views and structure, so the reported gains cannot be assigned to the threshold alone. It also leaves open whether the semantic weight of 0.2 should increase. That question requires evaluating the complete blend and its decision thresholds—not inferring that more semantic weight is automatically better.
As Ghosal puts it, “Every similarity floor is a bet about where real matches sit in the score distribution.” The value is defensible only to the extent that observed, representative examples support it.
