Chrome doesn’t have one search shortcut that is best for every situation. The practical time-saver is choosing the right place to search: the page you’re reading, a particular website, your browsing history, your open tabs, or the web at large. These built-in tools can reduce unnecessary browsing around, but Google’s documentation does not quantify time saved.
Which Chrome search should you use?
| What you’re trying to find | Chrome feature | What you need to remember | Setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| A word or phrase on the page currently open | Find in page | The phrase | None |
| Information on a particular website | Site-search shortcut | The site and query | Configure the site shortcut first |
| A page you visited before | History search | Words associated with the page | None |
| A page already open in a tab | Tab Search | Words from its title or content | None |
| Information anywhere on the web | Address-bar search | Your query | Uses your default search engine |
These are different ways to retrieve information, not a measured speed ranking. Availability can vary with Chrome settings, the default search engine, region, account state, or whether a workplace or school manages the browser.
Find a phrase on the page you’re reading
Use Chrome’s find-in-page feature when the information should be somewhere in the current page. Press Ctrl+f on Windows, Linux, or ChromeOS, or Command+f on Mac, then enter a word or phrase. Chrome searches the page and highlights matches.

Search a particular website from the address bar
If you already know which site is likely to have the answer, Chrome can send a query to that site using a site-search shortcut. Google Chrome Help describes these as shortcuts for searching specific sites. You need to set one up on desktop Chrome first.
- Open Chrome’s Settings, then go to Search engine and Manage search engines and site search. Labels or placement may vary by Chrome version.
- Add or edit a site-search entry. The site must have a search-results URL with
%swhere the query belongs. For example, a site’s results URL might look likehttps://example.com/search?q=%s; use the actual URL pattern for the site you want. - Give the entry a shortcut keyword and save it.
- In the address bar, type the shortcut keyword, press Tab or Space, enter your query, and press Enter.
The shortcut is most useful when you have a likely destination in mind. It does not establish that searching a site is faster for every question. Google’s setup guidance is in Chrome’s instructions for default search engines and site-search shortcuts.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Type
@historyin the address bar. - Press Tab or Space.
- Enter words you remember from the page or topic, then choose a result.
Google says history groups can also help you resume earlier browsing. This searches Chrome’s browsing history; it is distinct from search activity saved to a Google Account. See Google’s Chrome history help.

Find a page that’s already open in a tab
When the page is open somewhere among your tabs, use Tab Search rather than opening another web search. Type @tabs in the address bar, press Tab or Space, and enter words related to the tab. You can also open Tab Search with Ctrl+Shift+A on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+A on Mac. Google documents the feature in its Chrome tab-management help.
Search the web generally
For a broad query, type it in Chrome’s address bar, which combines web-address entry and search. The selected default search engine handles the query, and some address-bar features depend on that choice. Google’s overview, Search the web in Chrome, also describes finding items in bookmarks and browsing history.

Chrome may show address-bar suggestions based on browsing history and the default search engine. Google says that when Improve search suggestions is enabled, text and related information may be sent to the default search engine. If Google is the default and Make searches and browsing better is enabled, the current URL may also be sent. Review Google’s explanation of how Chrome handles URL and search data if you want details about these settings.
AI-powered history search is a separate option
Chrome also offers an AI-powered way to search browsing history, but it has narrower availability than the standard @history search. Google’s help page says the AI feature requires a US location and Chrome in English. When it is enabled, page contents for sites visited afterward are stored locally and encrypted, according to Google; the feature can be turned off. Check Google’s AI history search guidance for current eligibility and controls.

Keep history search useful
Deleting browsing history removes visited addresses from Chrome’s History page and can also remove associated New Tab shortcuts and address-bar predictions. Consider that effect before clearing history if you rely on it to find pages again. Chrome browsing history and Google Account search activity are separate data categories; Google explains deletion options in its instructions for deleting browsing data.
