No. A factory reset erases data stored on the phone, but it does not necessarily remove the organization’s server-side enrollment. If the device is assigned through Samsung Knox Mobile Enrollment (KME) or Android zero-touch, it can return to management during setup. The organization’s administrator must release it from the relevant service.

What a reset does—and what it does not do

A factory reset clears local user data and returns the phone to its initial setup flow. It does not, by itself, deregister the device from an organization’s cloud enrollment service. Google says a registered zero-touch device cannot be removed from organizational management by resetting it; the IT administrator must unregister it. Google’s zero-touch guidance for users explains that users should contact their administrator.

Samsung likewise says that a device enrolled through Knox Mobile Enrollment can re-enroll after a reset, with Knox Manage installed automatically when configured. A reset may therefore trigger provisioning rather than cancel it. Samsung Knox documentation describes this enrollment behavior.

Identify which prompt is stopping setup

“Knox or MDM lock” can refer to different controls. Read the setup screen closely: an organization or management message, a request for a previously used Google account, and a device lock screen have different release paths.

What you see What it usually indicates Who can resolve it
A message that the device belongs to an organization or must be managed KME, Android zero-touch, or another enterprise enrollment assignment The organization’s KME, zero-touch, or EMM administrator
A request to verify a Google account previously used on the phone Factory Reset Protection (FRP), an account-verification feature The authorized account holder or, where configured for an organization-owned device, its administrator
A device lock associated with Knox administration A Knox-configured lock condition The responsible KME administrator, using the authorized unlock process

MDM (mobile device management) or EMM (enterprise mobility management) software applies an organization’s policies, apps, restrictions, and sometimes lock actions. Knox Manage is one Samsung EMM. KME is Samsung’s enrollment service; Android zero-touch is Google’s separate automatic provisioning service. FRP is not the same as any of those enrollment services. Google documents enterprise FRP configuration in its Android Enterprise FAQ and enterprise FRP setup guidance.

How to get the device released legitimately

  1. Confirm the message type. Note whether setup says the phone is managed or asks for an account previously used on it. If it is a Knox lock screen, note that separately.
  2. For an organization enrollment screen, contact the named organization or prior owner. Ask its administrator to remove or unassign the KME profile/device, unenroll it from the EMM, or unregister it from Android zero-touch, as applicable. Provide the IMEI, serial number, or other identifier shown during setup. Google’s zero-touch guidance directs users to the organization for deregistration; Samsung documents the administrator steps to unenroll devices and manage KME assignments.
  3. For FRP, use the previously associated account. If the device belonged to an organization and its enterprise FRP policy is involved, contact that organization’s administrator. Do not treat an enrollment release as a substitute for account verification.
  4. For a Knox-administered device lock, ask the responsible administrator to unlock it. Samsung documents an administrator-generated one-time PIN for supported locks configured through advanced KME profile settings. See Samsung’s advanced profile settings documentation.
  5. If buying used, have the seller complete release and reset before you pay. Confirm the device proceeds through setup without an organization enrollment prompt. This helps ensure the server-side assignment has actually been cleared, rather than merely erased locally.

Why the fix depends on enrollment and Android version

The exact setup experience varies with enrollment path, Android version, ownership mode, EMM configuration, and whether the device can reach enrollment servers. Google says zero-touch provisioning requires internet access during setup. If an assigned device reaches the service, it can receive its enterprise configuration again; resetting repeatedly does not remove the assignment. Google’s IT-admin guidance covers setup and deregistration.

FRP behavior also depends on the reset method and administrator policy. In its Knox Mobile Enrollment 25.11 release notes dated November 19, 2025, Samsung states: “To align with Google’s updated policies, Knox Mobile Enrollment doesn’t support bypass of Factory Reset Protection (FRP) on devices running Android 15 or later.” That release note is specific to KME and Android 15 or later; it does not make FRP and MDM enrollment the same issue. Samsung Knox Mobile Enrollment release notes provide the dated policy detail.

What not to rely on

  • Repeated factory resets: they erase local data but do not unregister a cloud-assigned device.
  • Consumer unlocking tools or generic repair utilities: the documented release routes are administrator deregistration or authorized account recovery, not a local reset workaround.
  • A seller’s assurance that the phone was reset: a reset alone does not prove the organization released it. Ask for the enrollment assignment to be removed and verify setup before completing a used-device purchase.
