Yes. In the United States, LATISSE (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03%) is a prescription treatment indicated for inadequate eyelashes. It can increase lash length, thickness and darkness, but its clinical trial measured overall eyelash prominence—not a guaranteed increase in length. It also requires nightly application and carries eye-area risks, including the possibility of permanent iris darkening.
What the drug is—and what it is approved to treat
LATISSE is the brand name for bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03%. The U.S. prescribing information indicates it for eyelash hypotrichosis: inadequate or not enough eyelashes. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s 2014 review says LATISSE was approved for this use in December 2008.
This is a prescription treatment, not simply a cosmetic serum. The label describes increased lash growth, including length, thickness and darkness. A clinician can determine whether it is appropriate for a particular person.
What the clinical trial found
In the pivotal adult study, 278 participants were assigned to LATISSE or a vehicle control and treated for four months. At week 16, 107 of 137 participants using LATISSE (78%) had at least a one-grade improvement from baseline on the Global Eyelash Assessment, compared with 26 of 141 participants using the vehicle (18%). Improvements were statistically significant at weeks 8, 12 and 16.
#1 Best Overall
The 78% figure means those participants met the study’s overall eyelash-prominence endpoint. It does not mean their lashes grew 78% longer, and it does not predict an individual result. The study was double-masked, randomized and vehicle-controlled; these results are reported in the U.S. National Library of Medicine’s DailyMed prescribing information, revised July 2024.
How labeled application works
The label directs users to apply LATISSE nightly to the skin of the upper eyelid margin at the base of the eyelashes. Follow the supplied instructions and use only the prescribed product and its supplied applicators.

Risks to discuss with a prescriber
The prescribing information warns that eyelid or iris pigmentation can occur. Iris pigmentation is likely to be permanent. Other warnings include hair growth outside the treatment area, possible effects on intraocular pressure, intraocular inflammation and macular edema.

In the adult trial, the most common adverse reactions were eye itching, conjunctival hyperemia (eye redness) and skin hyperpigmentation, each reported in approximately 3% to 4% of participants. These trial rates do not rule out other effects or predict an individual’s risk. Review the complete prescribing information and discuss personal risks with a prescriber, particularly if you have an eye condition or use medicines that affect eye pressure.

The label says eyelash growth is expected to return toward its pretreatment level after LATISSE is discontinued. The treatment therefore involves regular application to maintain its effect.

How it differs from cosmetic options
Mascara and false lashes provide temporary cosmetic effects; LATISSE is a prescription treatment with a clinical trial endpoint and drug-specific warnings. The available evidence here does not compare LATISSE head-to-head with cosmetic serums, mascara, false lashes or other appearance products, so it cannot establish that these options are equivalent in effectiveness or risk.
