A long-unexplained signal in chloraminated drinking water has been identified as chloronitramide anion, a product of inorganic chloramine decomposition. In a study of 40 samples from 10 U.S. water systems, researchers detected it in every sample. The finding establishes its presence in those samples—not that it is harmful or that U.S. tap water is unsafe.
What was identified?
The compound is chloronitramide anion, written Cl–N–NO₂⁻. Fairey and colleagues identified it as a previously unrecognized end product of inorganic chloramine decomposition. The structure of the compound was not known when the earlier signal was first observed.
Inorganic chloramines are used to disinfect drinking water. The study describes their use as a way to protect public health while curbing the formation of regulated disinfection byproducts. Chloronitramide is a newly characterized product of chloramine decomposition; the study does not say that water systems deliberately add it as a disinfectant.

What does “first detected 40 years ago” mean?
More than 40 years ago, water researchers noticed an unexplained interference in ultraviolet-absorbance monitoring of monochloramine and dichloramine. That observation was a signal from an unknown product, not a chemical identification. The recent study assigned the signal to chloronitramide anion.

The distinction matters: the signal had been observed for decades, but its molecular identity was not established until this study.
How much did the study find?
The researchers tested 40 samples collected from 10 chloraminated drinking-water systems in the United States. They detected chloronitramide anion in all 40. Concentrations varied substantially across the samples:

These are results from the study’s samples, not a national estimate. The sample set does not establish how common the compound is across all U.S. systems, how concentrations change over time, or what a particular household’s water contains.

No health-effect conclusion follows from detection alone. The study establishes that chloronitramide anion was present in the tested samples; it does not establish that the compound causes harm or quantify the risk, if any, from exposure at the measured levels. The authors call for further occurrence and toxicity studies.

A concentration by itself cannot show whether a substance is dangerous. Risk assessment also requires evidence about toxicity and exposure. It would therefore be misleading to compare these measurements directly with levels of regulated contaminants as if the numbers alone revealed equivalent risk or regulatory status.

This is a meaningful identification in drinking-water chemistry: a decades-old monitoring interference now has a chemical identity, and the compound was found in every sample in a limited study. It is a reason for further study, not proof that chloraminated water is unsafe. The authors specifically call for more work on occurrence and toxicity; the cited study does not establish a consumer test or treatment method for this compound.
