Keep one team-facing map of links, and make the repository README its entry point. Put links to files that travel with the code as relative paths, connect recurring external ticket IDs with autolinks where your GitHub plan supports them, and check documentation links on a schedule or in CI. Keep personal reading material in a bookmark manager, not in the project. The rest of this guide explains how to set each piece up and where each one breaks down.
Decide which links belong to the team
Most link sprawl comes from mixing two jobs. A team map answers “where do we find X for this project?” and must stay accurate for every contributor. A personal collection answers “what did I save while investigating Y?” and can be messy. When both live in the same place, new contributors can’t tell which links are authoritative, and stale ones keep circulating.
Each kind of link has a natural home. The table below compares the main options by the problem each one solves and the trade-off to plan for.
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute| Place | Best for | Trade-off to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Repository README | Project-wide entry point; links that should travel with the code and be visible to anyone who opens the repo | Must be edited when destinations change; long lists become hard to scan |
| GitHub Project description and status updates | Team-level overview, current progress, and contacts for a project board | Only useful if the board is the team’s working space; avoid copying the same facts into several fields |
| Repository autolinks | Repeated references to external ticket or support IDs, such as Jira or Zendesk | Needs repository admin setup and a plan that supports autolinks; only works where the ID format and URL pattern are stable |
| Link checker | Finding likely broken links during review or in CI | Flags need human review; results can be affected by logins, bot blocking, and redirects |
| Bookmark manager | Personal capture of external articles and saved page copies | Not visible to teammates unless shared; not a substitute for project documentation |
The principle behind this split is a single source of truth. Each fact that changes, such as a deployment URL or the current release process, should live in one canonical place, with every other mention linking to it instead of copying it. GitHub’s guidance on Projects recommends this approach to avoid information drifting across fields.

Build the README link map
GitHub’s documentation on repository README files describes the README as often the first item a visitor sees when opening a repository, and recommends using it to explain what the project is, what users can do with it, how to get started, where to get help, and who maintains it. A link map fits naturally into that structure, so you don’t need a separate index page that people won’t find.
Add a “Start here” section
Place a short section near the top of the README that lists the destinations people use most. Include only the ones that exist for your project. A typical section covers:
- Documentation, linked to the main docs index or to a relative path inside the repository
- Contribution instructions, such as
CONTRIBUTING.md - The issue tracker, and the discussions or support channel if you use one
- Releases and changelog
- A deployment or status page, only if the project actually has one
Use labels that match the project’s real resources. An empty “Status” line added to fill a template gives readers a dead end and adds one more link to maintain. The categories above are an editorial suggestion built on GitHub’s README purpose guidance, not a required format.

Use relative links for files in the repository
GitHub notes that relative links are easier for people who clone a repository, and that in rendered Markdown the path is adjusted to the branch being viewed. A link to a file in the same repository should therefore be a path, not a full URL to the default branch. Here is an example for a README that sits at the repository root:
## Start here
- [Contributing guide](CONTRIBUTING.md)
- [Architecture notes](docs/architecture/overview.md)
- [Release notes](CHANGELOG.md)
- [Issue tracker](https://github.com/example-org/example-project/issues)
Only the last link is external, and it is the only one that would break if the repository were renamed without a redirect. Confirm each relative link from the file that contains it, especially for documents nested several folders below the root, because a path that works from the repository root may fail from a subfolder.
Keep changing facts in one place
Put team-wide context and project-level links in the GitHub Project description or the README, and use status updates for progress. When a fact changes, such as the current staging environment, update the canonical location and let other documents link to it. Copying the value into three places guarantees that two of them will eventually be wrong.

Connect external ticket IDs with autolinks
If contributors keep typing IDs from an external tracker, such as a Jira key or a Zendesk ticket number, autolinks let GitHub turn those references into clickable links. A repository administrator defines a prefix and a target URL template. GitHub then links references in issues, pull requests, commits, and release descriptions to the external system.
GitHub’s documentation on configuring autolinks lists availability on Pro, Team, Enterprise Cloud, and Enterprise Server. If your account or organization is on another plan, check the current plan comparison before planning around autolinks. Availability can change, so verify it on the day you set this up.
- Confirm the plan. A repository administrator should check that the repository’s plan includes autolinks.
- Choose a prefix that does not overlap with another reference type. For example,
PROJ-is clearer than a short prefix that could match other text, such as a version number or a bug label. - In the repository settings, open the autolink references section and add a new reference.
- Enter the prefix and the target URL template. GitHub uses a
<num>token to mark where the matched number goes. For a hypothetical tracker, the template might look like this:https://tickets.example.com/browse/PROJ-<num>. - Test the setup. Write a comment or pull request description containing a real ID, such as
PROJ-123, and confirm that the rendered text links to the correct external record.
Autolinks work with any external system that has a stable URL pattern. They do not check whether the external record exists, and they do not fix references that were written before the autolink was added unless those references are edited or reviewed. Treat them as a convenience for repeated ID formats, not as a link validator.

Check links on a schedule or in CI
Even a well-organized README drifts. Pages move, vendors rename documentation sections, and tutorials disappear. A link checker catches many of these problems before readers do. Two tools in the current landscape are worth knowing about, though the available sources do not compare their accuracy, so pick based on your format and workflow.
- W3C Link Checker. W3C’s list of validators and tools includes a Link Checker that checks web pages for broken links. It suits published HTML documentation sites. It is not designed around a repository’s Markdown source.
- Linkspector. The UmbrellaDocs project describes Linkspector as a tool for checking dead links in Markdown and AsciiDoc files, with support for running locally or in CI. It fits repositories whose documentation lives in those formats.
Run a checker locally first
Run the checker on your documentation before wiring it into automation. This lets you see how many results need review and what kinds of failures appear. Note which files produce false positives, such as links to pages that require a login, and decide how to handle them before they become noise in every build.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Add it to CI for documentation changes
Once local results are manageable, run the checker in continuous integration on pull requests that touch documentation. Scope the job to Markdown or documentation paths when possible so that code-only changes do not wait on external sites. Decide in advance whether a failing link blocks a merge or creates a report for a maintainer to review. Blocking merges on flaky external links usually causes teams to disable the check.

Review failures before you fix them
A failed check is a lead, not a verdict. Several ordinary conditions produce failures for pages that are fine:
- Authentication: the page requires a sign-in, so the checker receives a login screen.
- Bot blocking: the site refuses automated requests or rate-limits them.
- Redirects: the URL has moved. The fix is usually to update the link to the new address, not to delete the reference.
- Temporary outages: the site was down during the check. Re-run before editing anything.
For each failure, open the link in a browser, decide whether the content still serves the same purpose, and then update, replace, or remove it. Keep a short note in the pull request when you remove a link so reviewers understand why.
Keep personal bookmarks separate
A bookmark manager is useful for personal capture. Linkwarden, for example, is described in its project repository as a tool for saving useful pages and preserving page captures, which can help when an article you referenced later disappears. Those captures are valuable for your own work. They are not a substitute for team documentation, because teammates can’t find them in the repository and the collection usually reflects one person’s search history.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The working rule is simple: if a teammate needs a link to do their job on this project, it belongs in the README, the project description, or the documentation. If it is background reading you collected for yourself, it can live in a bookmark manager. When a personal find turns into a project decision, move the link into the shared documentation and link to the decision, not to your private collection.
Keep the map current
Schedule a quick review of the README link section whenever the project changes its tooling, moves its documentation, or changes its ticketing system. Pair that review with the CI check so that broken links are caught between reviews. The goal is not a perfect link set but a short, owned list where every entry has a clear reason to exist and someone who will notice when it stops working.
Sources cited here, including GitHub’s documentation for READMEs, Projects, and autolinks, the W3C validators list, and the Linkspector and Linkwarden project pages, describe features as of October 2026. Plan eligibility and tool capabilities can change, so confirm them against the current pages before you commit to a setup.
