A strong developer portfolio link gets a reviewer from “what kind of developer is this?” to “what work can I inspect?” quickly. Lead with your focus, feature a few relevant projects, explain your own contribution, and make the next steps—demo, code, and contact—easy to find. There is no established universal project count; the right number is the smallest set that proves the strengths relevant to the opportunity.
What should a developer portfolio include?
A clear first screen
Use a short introduction to state your role or focus and the kind of work you do. A visitor should not have to infer whether you build web applications, work on backend systems, or specialize in another area. Put the most useful next step—such as viewing projects or contacting you—somewhere easy to spot. CodeBegun and Waida Studio both recommend making the developer’s focus and portfolio contents clear (CodeBegun; Waida Studio).
A curated set of projects
Choose projects that support the kind of role or opportunity you want. Published recommendations differ: CodeBegun suggests two to four projects, while Waida Studio suggests three to six. Those are editorial ranges, not a proven hiring rule. Include enough work to demonstrate relevant strengths, but do not add weaker or repetitive examples just to reach a target.
Evidence, not just labels
For each project, give the reader a concise account of what it does and why it matters. Explain the problem, your role, an important decision or challenge, and the result. Name technologies where they help explain the work—not as a disconnected list of tools you hope to use. The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Career Center’s LinkedIn profile guidance likewise emphasizes describing accomplishments, results, and skills in experience entries.

Working paths to inspect and follow up
Where available, link each project to a live demo and its repository or code. Make clear which parts you personally owned, especially for team projects. Keep relevant GitHub and LinkedIn profiles and a direct contact method easy to find; include a resume or CV download if it is useful for the recipient’s next step. CodeBegun and Waida Studio both describe these practical portfolio elements (CodeBegun; Waida Studio).
How do you decide which projects to feature?
Compare candidate projects on four questions. This is a practical selection framework, not a published scoring system:
Rank #2

- Sleek & stunning in hand - Compact for travel: Leather folder looks gorgeous held in hand walking into the board meeting, law school, or interview while sliding neatly into handbags, backpacks while maintaining far greater storage than traditional leather planners.
- Give the gift that says, “I believe you will succeed” with this premium, practical, stylish gift for graduates, lawyers, business professionals and those on the rise. - Ultimate satisfaction: Quality. Service. Elation with everything you order from us, that’s the Cossini brand philosophy. From the luxurious PU leather, to the buttery smooth zipper pull, to the organization that flows with your changing life, you’ll feel satisfied with your decision to purchase.
- Role relevance: Does the project demonstrate work connected to the position or opportunity?
- Explainability: Can you clearly describe your contribution, decisions, and trade-offs?
- Inspectability: Can a visitor actually reach a working demo, repository, or other useful evidence?
- Distinct evidence: Does it show a strength not already demonstrated by another project?
A smaller portfolio is often stronger when each project adds credible, different evidence. If a project is mainly tutorial-following and you cannot explain its design or code, leave it out; the readytodev-pro GitHub portfolio guide specifically cautions against featuring work you cannot discuss.

- Unexplainable work: Do not present a project as evidence of your ability if you cannot explain how it works or what you contributed.
- Broken or empty links: A demo that fails or a repository that does not show the intended work can undermine the project. If a live demo is unavailable, omit that link rather than sending visitors to a broken destination.
- Padding and unrelated personal detail: Keep projects and biographical information connected to the role or opportunity the portfolio supports.
- Visual effects that get in the way: Avoid layouts or interactions that make it harder to locate and inspect your work. The University of Illinois Career Center warns that unusual layouts and graphics can create rendering, applicant-tracking, and screen-reader problems for resumes; that is resume-specific guidance, not a portfolio technical standard, but it is a useful reason to favor clarity when the portfolio accompanies one (UIUC resume guidance).
Should the portfolio be one page or several?
A single page with anchored sections can work well for a small collection. Waida Studio says this format can serve developers with fewer than four projects. A dedicated project page is useful when a case study needs room to explain the problem, your role, decisions, and result. Choose the simplest structure that lets a recruiter scan the work and an engineer inspect it.
Rank #3

How to check the link before sharing
- Open the portfolio on a phone and confirm that your role or focus is immediately visible.
- Click every demo and repository link; confirm each opens and displays the intended project.
- Review the project explanations and make sure your personal contribution is clear, especially where others worked on the project with you.
- Remove any link or section that is broken, empty, or not useful to the recipient.
The readytodev-pro guide advises checking project links before application waves and warns about broken demos (GitHub portfolio guide). Reviewing the page on a phone is practical advice; the cited portfolio guides do not establish a formal performance or accessibility threshold.
