One enthusiast reported that delidding a Ryzen 7 5800X3D and replacing its thermal interface material helped the processor run about 10°C cooler with higher boost clocks in a Forza Horizon 5 comparison. That is a noteworthy result from a single chip, not evidence that other 5800X3D owners should expect the same improvement—or that delidding unlocks official CPU overclocking.
What the delidding report actually found
In 2022, an enthusiast identified as “Madness” removed the processor’s integrated heat spreader (IHS), changed the thermal interface material to Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut, and reinstalled the heat spreader. Tom’s Hardware reported that the modified CPU ran 10°C cooler, used less power, and boosted faster under the same system load while playing Forza Horizon 5. TechSpot also covered the result and said the chip had previously reached temperatures of up to 90°C during long sessions. Both articles describe the same enthusiast experiment; they are not independent replications. (Tom’s Hardware’s report; TechSpot’s report)
The result is best understood as a before-and-after account of a bundled modification. The reports do not provide a full controlled test protocol, repeat runs, ambient conditions, or exact before-and-after clock figures. Because the work included both removing the IHS and changing the interface compound, the published comparison cannot establish how much of the temperature difference came from delidding alone.

Why this is not a routine cooling tweak
The 5800X3D is an eight-core, 16-thread AM4 processor with 96 MB of L3 cache. Its 3D V-Cache is stacked with the Zen 3 compute die, creating delicate hardware beneath the heat spreader. In the reported procedure, the operator applied heat in the range of 150°C to 200°C while prying at the IHS. The report also notes nearby surface-mount components. Damage to the die or surrounding components can permanently destroy the CPU. (Tom’s Hardware’s report; TechSpot’s report)
#1 Best Overall
- The world's fastest gaming desktop processor and first gaming processor with 3D stacking technology
- 8 Cores and 16 processing threads with AMD 3D V-Cache technology
- 4.5 GHz Max Boost, 100 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
- For the advanced Socket AM4 platform, can support PCIe 4.0 on X570 and B550 motherboards
- Cooler not included, high-performance cooler recommended
Conductonaut is a liquid-metal thermal compound, not an ordinary paste. Its use in this one modification is not a general recommendation to open the processor: applying liquid metal and working around exposed CPU components adds further risk, and the reported outcome does not demonstrate a repeatable procedure for other owners.
Does delidding let you overclock a 5800X3D?
No. A cooler-running sample is not an officially unlocked processor. AMD’s stated position for the 5800X3D is that CPU frequency overclocking and core-voltage adjustment are unsupported. AMD explained that the first-generation 3D V-Cache had tighter voltage and frequency limits than conventional desktop Ryzen parts. In a 2022 explanation, AMD director of technical marketing Robert Hallock put the 3D V-Cache voltage limit at roughly 1.3V to 1.35V, compared with higher boost voltages on other desktop parts at that time. These figures describe AMD’s explanation of that generation’s design, not a tuning target for users. (Tom’s Hardware’s report on AMD’s overclocking position)

- Powerful Gaming Performance
- 8 Cores and 16 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 3" architecture
- 4.8 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 36 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support

- AMD Wraith Prism Cooler with RGB LED included
The CPU’s listed base clock is 3.4 GHz and its maximum boost clock is 4.5 GHz. A report of improved boost behavior in one game does not establish a new guaranteed clock speed or change AMD’s stated limits. Memory and fabric tuning are separate from changing CPU core frequency or voltage. (Tom’s Hardware’s 5800X3D review)

If your 5800X3D is running hotter than expected, start with reversible checks rather than removing the IHS:

- 5 nm process technology for reliable performance with maximum productivity
- Octa-core (8 Core) processor core allows multitasking with great reliability and fast processing speed
- 8 MB L2 plus 96 MB L3 cache memory provides excellent hit rate in short access time enabling improved system performance
- Confirm the CPU cooler is mounted correctly and its fan or pump is operating as intended.
- Check case airflow and remove obvious dust or blocked intake and exhaust paths.
- Verify that your exact motherboard model supports the 5800X3D and has an appropriate BIOS. The launch-era review cited AGESA 1.2.0.6b or newer; for a current system, consult the motherboard maker’s CPU support list and BIOS notes rather than treating that historical minimum as current guidance.
- If the cooler needs replacement, choose one compatible with AM4. The processor supports standard AM4 coolers, but no specific cooler or temperature improvement is established by the reports discussed here. (Tom’s Hardware’s 5800X3D review)
These checks do not promise a particular temperature; they address installation, airflow, and compatibility without exposing the CPU die and surrounding components to the mechanical and thermal hazards of delidding.

Take it as one enthusiast’s reported result in a gaming comparison, not as a typical gain, a controlled product test, or a forecast for your PC. The public accounts do not establish that another 5800X3D would improve by 10°C, run faster in every workload, or consume less power after the same operation. They also do not isolate the effect of delidding from the compound replacement and reinstallation.

For most owners, the practical distinction is straightforward: delidding may have helped this particular CPU, but it is an invasive, high-risk modification, and the observed boost change does not grant official core-overclocking or voltage-adjustment support.
