No. A customer returning to your site is not proof that a payment succeeded. Keep the order pending until your server verifies the provider’s eligible paid status. Use the return page to reassure the customer and show progress; do not let a browser redirect alone trigger access, release goods, inventory changes, or a paid order state.
Why a return URL is not payment confirmation
A return URL records a navigation event: the customer’s browser arrived back at your site. Payment status is a separate fact maintained by the payment provider. A customer might reach a success page before a delayed payment method settles, or without a reliable confirmation reaching your application.
For Stripe Checkout, a Session has both a general status and a separate payment_status. A Session can be complete while its payment status is still unpaid. Stripe identifies payment_status as the field to use when deciding whether to fulfill an order. See Stripe’s Checkout Session object reference.

Keep the order pending until the server verifies payment
Before redirecting to checkout
- Create the order or checkout attempt on your server in a pending state.
- Create the provider payment session or request and save its identifier against that order.
- Redirect the customer to the provider’s checkout experience.
This gives your return handler and webhook processor a server-side record to check. The exact order schema is an application design choice; the important part is to associate the provider’s identifier with the pending order.
When the customer returns
Show a neutral message such as “We’re checking your payment” unless your server can verify an eligible paid state. A browser query parameter, a client-side success message, or arrival at a success URL must not be the sole authority for changing durable order state.

If the provider supports a server-side status lookup, use it to inform what the page displays. For example, Checkout.com documents an optional payment-details lookup using the cko-payment-id supplied in the return URL. That lookup can help show progress to the customer; Checkout.com still directs merchants to wait for the webhook before fulfillment. See its Flow documentation and its payment-details guidance.
When the provider reports the result
Process provider notifications on your server and change the order to paid only when the relevant status confirms payment. Make the state transition and fulfillment resilient to retries or repeated notifications, so the same payment confirmation cannot accidentally trigger duplicate fulfillment. These are implementation safeguards; the provider-specific event names and status rules must come from the provider’s current documentation for the payment method, account, and region you use.

Handle delayed payment methods explicitly
Some payment methods settle after the checkout session is complete. Stripe documents that unpaid can mean funds are not yet available, and that a delayed result can arrive later. For Stripe Checkout, handle the relevant asynchronous success and failure events as well as checkout.session.completed; check the resulting Session’s payment_status before fulfillment. See the Session object reference and Stripe’s fulfillment guidance.
checkout.session.async_payment_succeeded: verify the resulting payment status, then fulfill if it is eligible.checkout.session.async_payment_failed: do not mark the order paid; keep it in an appropriate failed or pending state and offer a retry or support path.
Do not treat checkout.session.completed alone as proof of payment when the Session remains unpaid. Leave the order pending while an asynchronous result is outstanding.

Use provider-specific confirmation rules
The principle is broadly applicable, but providers do not necessarily use the same status fields, event names, or timing. Stripe Checkout separates Session status from payment status and documents asynchronous success and failure events. Checkout.com Flow uses payment-status webhooks for fulfillment guidance and describes a server-side details lookup that can support the return-page experience.

Follow the current documentation for the provider, payment method, account, and region in your integration. Identify the authoritative paid state, the events that can establish success or failure, and any asynchronous settlement behavior before connecting payment status to fulfillment.
