In a first-person account published by Tom’s Guide on October 8, 2026, Elton Jones asked ChatGPT to plan an affordable fall weekend in New York City with a $100 budget. The itinerary included free and low-cost outings, and one event—the NYC Fungus Festival—prompted him to reflect on a kind of playful curiosity he had not felt in years. The reported costs and event details are the author’s account, not independently verified prices or current listings.

What ChatGPT suggested for the three-day challenge

Jones’s prompt was: “I only have $100. Plan a perfect fall weekend with the most fun and affordable activities for me in New York City, with that in mind.” Tom’s Guide framed the challenge as 72 hours, or a three-day weekend.

Friday: a free museum visit and an evening out

The article says ChatGPT proposed a free museum visit, an evening walk and an inexpensive dinner for an estimated $18 total. It highlights MoMA’s UNIQLO Friday Nights, described in the article as free for New York State residents from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. with an advance reservation. Those eligibility, schedule and admission details are reported by the article and should not be treated as confirmation of MoMA’s current policy.

Saturday: Brooklyn festivals and activities

For Saturday, the article reports an estimated $35 plan featuring ALIVE NYC by Daybreaker, the African Restaurant Week Festival and Kréol Fest 2026. It describes the options as free and notes that some required an RSVP. The specific 2026 listings and their arrangements were not confirmed by authoritative organizers in the reporting available for this account.

Sunday: Central Park and a fungi festival

The Sunday plan paired an outing in Central Park with the NYC Fungus Festival at The Battery. The article describes the festival as free, with mushroom discussions, nature walks, workshops, local artists and food vendors. It says the main plan and backup purchases brought the weekend to the $100 limit; it does not provide an independently audited accounting of every expense.

What made the fungi event stand out

Jones says the festival brought back the feeling of childhood field trips. That response is the personal payoff of his story: an unusual outing helped him reconnect with an activity he had enjoyed as a child. It is an anecdotal reflection, not evidence that using ChatGPT generally gets people out of the house or improves wellbeing.

The article reproduces ChatGPT’s closing line: “Don’t pay for anything that NYC gives you for free.” It works as a reminder to look for no-cost options, but a free admission listing does not necessarily mean a whole outing costs nothing once transport, food or other purchases are included.

What this shows—and what it doesn’t—about ChatGPT

ChatGPT can help turn a budget, location and interests into activity ideas and a draft itinerary. OpenAI’s travel examples include building itineraries, budgeting for trips and finding local events: OpenAI’s travel use cases.

That makes it a useful starting point, not a substitute for checking the details that determine whether a plan will work. OpenAI says ChatGPT can search the web for current information and links, while also warning that results and citations may be incomplete, outdated or incorrect. Its location-based results may use approximate location: Searching the web with ChatGPT.

The $18 Friday and $35 Saturday figures are estimates reported in Jones’s article. The account says Sunday’s plan and backup purchases used the remaining budget. They are not guarantees that another visitor can repeat the itinerary for the same amount, particularly if transportation, meals, availability or event details differ.

Plan a three-day weekend in [city or neighborhood] on [dates] for no more than [total budget], including transportation and food. I’m interested in [activities]. I need [mobility or access requirements], prefer [pace or indoor/outdoor balance], and have these dietary or weather constraints: [details]. For each time-sensitive activity, include a source link, expected cost, hours, booking or RSVP requirements, travel time, and one backup option.

Before committing, check each listing with the venue or event organizer. Compare the full out-of-pocket cost, travel between neighborhoods, opening and ending times, indoor or outdoor setting, and any reservation requirements. This is especially important for seasonal events and listings tied to a particular weekend.
