The breakfast is chia seed pudding topped with walnuts. Cardiologist Lars Sondergaard, MD, called it an “omega-3 powerhouse” in a Parade article published April 8, 2026. The phrase refers to plant-based omega-3 fat; it is not evidence that the pudding treats heart problems or supplies the same omega-3s as oily fish.
What makes chia pudding with walnuts an omega-3 breakfast?
Chia seeds and English walnuts contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant omega-3. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements lists these amounts per ounce:
| Food | ALA per 1 ounce |
|---|---|
| Chia seeds | 5.06 g |
| English walnuts | 2.57 g |
Those figures describe ALA, not EPA or DHA. They are amounts in an ounce of each food, not necessarily the quantity in a bowl of pudding; the recipe and serving size determine how much you eat. See the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements’ omega-3 fact sheet for the food values and distinctions among omega-3 types.

It can fit into a heart-conscious eating pattern, but the cardiologist’s description is not a clinical finding about this particular breakfast. Sondergaard, identified by Parade as a cardiologist and Abbott’s structural heart division chief medical officer and divisional vice president, said: “It requires minimal effort and provides an omega-3 powerhouse that supports heart rhythm and blood flow.” The article does not report a trial showing that chia pudding improves heart rhythm or blood flow.

ALA should not be treated as interchangeable with EPA and DHA. The body converts only small amounts of ALA into those long-chain omega-3s. Fatty fish and seafood provide EPA and DHA; chia seeds and walnuts provide ALA. For that reason, this breakfast is not nutritionally equivalent to oily fish or a specified dose of EPA or DHA.
The American Heart Association recommends two servings of fish per week, particularly fatty fish, as part of a heart-healthy dietary pattern; its guidance describes a cooked serving as 3 ounces. That recommendation complements rather than contradicts eating plant sources of ALA. Read the American Heart Association’s fish and omega-3 guidance, reviewed August 23, 2024.

How does ALA compare with adult intake guidance?
NIH ODS reproduces National Academies of Medicine adequate intake values of 1.6 g of ALA per day for adult men and 1.1 g per day for adult women. These are ALA values, not recommended EPA/DHA targets; pregnancy and lactation have different values. The underlying intake values date to 2005.
What can you add to chia pudding?
Walnuts are the topping associated with the omega-3 description, and they contribute ALA. Other ingredients can be chosen to suit taste and texture; the cited sources do not establish a particular topping combination as better for heart health. Keep in mind that the ALA amount depends on how much chia and walnut the serving contains.
