The “lie detector” is more precisely called a polygraph: it records physiological responses during a structured examination, not deception itself. Its history has no single uncontested inventor. Early blood-pressure research, a multichannel prototype, and later hardware development each contributed to the instrument people recognize today.

What the polygraph measures

A polygraph records bodily activity associated with arousal. Common channels include respiration, cardiovascular activity, and skin response. An examiner interprets those signals in relation to questions asked during a particular procedure.

The instrument does not directly register whether a statement is true. Anxiety, fear, surprise, and the interaction between examiner and examinee can also affect physiological responses. The National Research Council (NRC) concluded that contextual factors and weaknesses in the scientific foundation can lead to systematic error; the American Psychological Association (APA) likewise says there is little scientific basis for treating responses as a reliable measure of lying. See the NRC’s discussion of the scientific basis and the APA’s explainer on polygraphs.

Why there is no single inventor

The modern polygraph emerged through several kinds of work: earlier physiological recording, experiments linking bodily responses with deception, and the development of a machine that recorded multiple channels. The NRC’s history identifies competing origin claims involving Vittorio Benussi in 1914, William Moulton Marston’s research beginning in 1915, John August Larson’s multichannel prototype in 1921, and Leonarde Keeler’s later hardware work. These are different contributions, not interchangeable claims to having invented the same device.

How the lie detector developed

Before the multichannel instrument

Physiological recording existed before Marston’s work, and the NRC history notes Benussi’s 1914 work as one origin claim. Marston’s contribution was to explore whether changes in blood pressure could help assess deception. He began this research as a Harvard graduate student in 1915.

Marston’s proposal and wartime work

During World War I, Marston tried to interest the National Research Council’s Committee on Psychology in applying deception tests to espionage. The committee reviewed his proposal, but the NRC’s historical account says archival review found that it did not officially employ or sponsor him. Marston’s work helped advance the idea of using physiological recordings to assess deception, but it was not the same as building the later multichannel polygraph.

Larson’s multichannel prototype

In 1921, John August Larson constructed a prototype that recorded multiple physiological channels. That was an important shift from an approach centered on blood pressure alone. The NRC history says Larson pursued publication and expressed doubt that polygraph tests were suitable as court evidence.

Keeler’s hardware and promotion

Leonarde Keeler later developed hardware associated with the modern polygraph and marketed it to business and government users. The NRC contrasts his approach with Larson’s: Keeler patented hardware, controlled sales, and emphasized interrogation and examiner discretion, while Larson’s approach was more oriented toward open scientific publication. Those distinctions describe the NRC’s historical account, not a universal judgment about either man.

Why physiological readings do not prove a lie

A recorded change can have more than one cause. A person may react to a question because of anxiety or fear, for example, rather than because they are lying. How questions are designed, how the examination is conducted, and how a result is interpreted all matter. A reading and an examiner’s conclusion are separate things.

In a 1917 report quoted in the NRC’s historical appendix, John F. Shepard, who chaired the NRC subcommittee evaluating Marston’s proposal, warned that physiological reactions could arise from many circumstances involving intellectual or emotional activity, making individual cases difficult to distinguish. That early concern remains relevant to the basic interpretive problem: arousal is not unique to deception.

The APA’s explainer says, “Overall, while polygraph testing remains in widespread use, most psychologists and other scientists agree that there is little basis for the validity of polygraph tests.” This is the APA’s characterization, not a separate poll or a claim that every test, purpose, or jurisdiction is identical. There is no single general accuracy figure that can responsibly summarize all polygraph methods and settings.

How the polygraph has been used and debated

The NRC’s 2003 report examined polygraph use in criminal investigations, employment screening, and counter-intelligence. Its history also describes a recurring tension: a popular image of near-infallibility has existed alongside criticism of the scientific basis and disputes over screening policy. The report’s coverage does not mean every government, court, or employer uses polygraphs in the same way today.

To assess a claim about a particular polygraph use, distinguish the instrument’s recorded channels from the examination method and the decision being made. Evidence for one question format or setting should not automatically be applied to another, especially when a specific investigation and broad screening involve different contexts.
