Tumblr gives each blog tag its own page and offers a native Featured Tags list, but the available official documentation does not describe a built-in tag cloud that automatically sizes terms by frequency. For a compact index, you can curate up to 24 Featured Tags or build a custom theme display; either way, link each label to the matching tag page on your blog.
What a Tumblr tag cloud can—and cannot—do
Tags serve two jobs: they help visitors discover posts and help you organize your own archive. Tumblr’s Help Center puts it this way: “Your tags make it easier for others to find your posts on Tumblr, or organize posts by a specific topic on your blog.”
A tag cloud usually means a visual list in which terms may differ in size or prominence. Tumblr’s documented native option is a popular-tags list that blog owners can replace with up to 24 Featured Tags. The documentation does not establish that Tumblr automatically calculates a frequency-weighted cloud from every tag on a blog. Treat Featured Tags as a curated navigation feature, not as a live count of tag use.
Also distinguish public blog navigation from personal dashboard features. Followed-tag posts and colorized tags are dashboard preferences; they do not create a public tag cloud on your individual blog.

Choose how to show tags on your Tumblr blog
| Option | Best for | What it offers | Limits and checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tumblr Featured Tags | Owners who want a native, low-maintenance selection | A curated list of up to 24 tags. | It is not a documented frequency-scaled cloud. Check current Tumblr screens for availability and setup steps. Tumblr Featured Tags |
| Custom theme implementation | Owners comfortable editing theme code | Control over labels, grouping, layout and styling; links can point to your blog’s tag pages. | You need a dependable way to choose the displayed tags and should verify compatibility with your current theme. Tumblr’s tag-page behavior is documented, but a complete tag inventory or counts are not established by the cited API documentation. |
| Community plugin example | Readers who want to inspect existing code | TumblrCloudTag’s repository describes a jQuery plugin that retrieves a blog’s tags and displays them in a list. | The repository says an API key is required. Its current maintenance status, security and compatibility with today’s Tumblr API or themes are not established. TumblrCloudTag on GitHub |
How Tumblr tag pages work
A blog’s tag page uses the path /tagged/tag, where the final part is the tag. Tumblr says the page displays up to 200 of the most recent matching posts in reverse chronological order. Add /chrono to the path to show older posts first. For example, a tag page can use a structure like https://yourblog.tumblr.com/tagged/your-tag; chronological order can use https://yourblog.tumblr.com/tagged/your-tag/chrono. Replace the example domain and tag with your own.
Encode special characters when constructing a tag URL. Tumblr specifies %20 for spaces and %2B for plus signs. The tag page is the destination for a visitor browsing your blog; Tumblr-wide tag pages are dashboard-style views rather than your blog’s own archive navigation. See Tumblr’s Featured Tags help page for its explanation of tags and in-blog navigation.

Organize posts before building the index
A cloud is only as useful as the tags behind it. Use labels consistently so visitors can predict what a click will show. For instance, choose one spelling and format for a recurring topic rather than splitting the archive among near-duplicates. Tags can include spaces and dashes, but Tumblr says double quotation marks cannot be used in tags.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTag indexing limits vary by search surface. Tumblr’s Help Center says that since March 19, 2024, new posts can have up to 30 indexed tags in general search results, while in-blog search remains limited to 20 indexed tags. These are indexing limits, not a recommendation to add the maximum to every post. Tumblr Help Center: Tagging Your Posts

Design a cloud visitors can use
- Label the navigation. Use a clear heading such as “Browse by tag” so visitors know the terms are links to posts.
- Link to your own archive. Each displayed tag should open your blog’s corresponding
/tagged/page, not an unrelated dashboard view. - Keep every label readable. Test the design on narrow screens and ensure that tags remain legible when font sizes differ.
- Do not rely on visual emphasis alone. Size and color can add hierarchy, but they should not be the only way to communicate importance or distinguish links.
- Choose tags deliberately. A shorter, meaningful selection is often more useful for navigation than exposing every one-off label. If you use a custom theme, plan how the tag inventory will be maintained.
What the Tumblr API does and does not establish
Tumblr’s API documentation describes a /tagged endpoint for retrieving posts with a specified tag, with a request limit of 1–20 results. That supports fetching posts for a known tag; it does not establish an endpoint that returns every tag on a blog with usage counts or a frequency ranking. Do not assume that endpoint alone can power an automatically weighted cloud. Check the current API and theme environment before relying on a dynamic implementation. Tumblr API documentation: Tagged
