The roughly $1,000 figure refers to block tips diverted during an incident—not to the much larger amount of ETH in validators MetaMask reportedly exited. The roughly $5 billion figure is a conditional estimate of what that stake would be worth if it all returned as additional demand for Ethereum’s entry queue; it is not a theft total or a confirmed loss.
What the two dollar figures describe
The roughly $1,000 refers to diverted tips
Bitquery counted 0.36 ETH in diverted block tips across 18 blocks and said that ETH remained in the receiving wallet when it checked. CryptoSlate valued the 0.36 ETH at about $923 using its Oct. 7, 2026 ETH price snapshot. That is the source of the headline’s rounded $1,000 figure; it is not the value of the validators’ principal.
The roughly $5 billion is a return-demand scenario
CryptoSlate’s Oct. 7 snapshot showed 1,398,922 ETH waiting to enter the staking queue. Bitquery had estimated that 565,056 ETH associated with MetaMask-operated validators had exited or was queued to exit. If that entire estimated cohort were added to the entry backlog as new demand, the total would be 1,963,978 ETH. Valued at CryptoSlate’s cited price of $2,564.19 per ETH, that hypothetical workload is about $5.04 billion.
This is not $5.04 billion stolen, lost, or forecast to leave Ethereum. The scenario assumes the full cohort returns as additional demand, holds the observed entry backlog fixed, and applies one price snapshot. It was not known how much of the cohort would return, or how much might already be represented in the entry backlog.

What MetaMask said happened—and what remains unconfirmed
In an Oct. 1, 2026 update, MetaMask said it was responding to an incident affecting part of its infrastructure and had taken the precautionary step of exiting affected validators with partners. The company said: “Based on our investigation to date, there is no indication that MetaMask wallets or customer funds have been affected.” That describes MetaMask’s assessment at that point, while containment and verification were continuing.
MetaMask also said its staking operations are non-custodial and that it does not manage clients’ withdrawal keys. Its public update in the reporting reviewed did not give a root cause or publish a validator count.
Bitquery’s early Oct. 1 on-chain analysis estimated that 16,965 MetaMask-operated validators, holding 565,056 ETH, had exited or were queued to exit. This is Bitquery’s estimate, not a total confirmed by MetaMask in the reporting reviewed. Bitquery described using Lido’s published validator keys and fee-recipient messages to identify operator groups.

Bitquery said the chain data could not establish how the intruder gained access or whether signing keys, rather than settings around them, were compromised. The available statements do not establish that signing keys were stolen or that slashing occurred.
How the Ethereum staking queues work
Ethereum limits how quickly validators can enter or leave the active set. Entry and exit are separate queues: an exit does not itself take up entry capacity. ETH that has exited can add pressure to the entry queue only if it is deposited again and seeks activation.
Exiting is also not the same as having funds ready to restake. MetaMask’s help guide separates the exit message, the wait in the exit queue, and the later sweep that makes exited balances claimable. That sweep occurs through protocol state updates rather than a conventional user transaction.

What the Oct. 7 queue snapshot showed
CryptoSlate’s Oct. 7, 2026 snapshot recorded 1,398,922 ETH awaiting entry and 822,405 ETH awaiting exit. It estimated an entry wait of 24 days and seven hours. The same snapshot put total staked ETH at roughly 43.7 million, or 35.78% of supply. These are dated readings, not live queue figures.

The readings differ because they are from different dates and the queues change as validators enter and exit. The Oct. 2 and Oct. 5 figures should not be substituted into the Oct. 7 calculation.
How long could re-entry take?
For its Oct. 7 scenario, CryptoSlate used entry capacity of 256 ETH per 6.4-minute epoch, or 57,600 ETH per day. At that rate, the estimated 565,056 ETH cohort would use about 9.8 days of entry capacity if every ETH sought fresh activation. That is a capacity calculation for the cohort alone—not an individual depositor’s guaranteed wait, and not the time to complete an exit, withdrawal, and restaking cycle.

The full timeline depends on when validators leave, when balances become claimable, how the entry backlog changes, whether the ETH is redeposited, and how much other demand arrives. MetaMask’s help guide gives approximate rates of 3,375 validator exits per day and 1,800 activations per day, but labels them as rates “at the time of writing”; they should not be treated as permanent protocol limits.
Lido expected its last affected validators to stop staking by Oct. 7. That date concerned validator exits, not the completion of withdrawals or any subsequent restaking. CoinDesk reported Lido’s estimate of up to about 45 days for the full exit, withdrawal, and re-entry cycle; it is an estimate, not a guaranteed wait for every depositor.
What this means for stakers
The reported incident does not by itself mean that stakers’ wallet balances were taken or that all affected ETH will return to the entry queue. MetaMask’s dated statement reported no indication of wallet or customer-fund impact as of Oct. 1, while Bitquery’s estimate concerns validators and their stake. Those are different measures.

For stETH holders, Lido’s statement quoted by CoinDesk was: “No action is required from stETH holders.” That statement addresses holders’ actions; it does not mean that validator exits, withdrawals, or any later re-entry happen instantly. Any stake that returns to Ethereum could also be deposited through a different operator, rather than returning to the same one.
The practical distinction is between an incident-related exit and a possible later wave of entry demand. The former was reported and estimated on-chain; the latter is what makes the $5 billion scenario conditional.
