An associative entity—also called a junction table, join table, or, in some analytics contexts, a bridge table—represents a many-to-many relationship as one row per link. It holds a foreign key to each endpoint, turning the relationship into two one-to-many relationships. If the link has its own facts, such as quantity, RSVP status, or attendance, model it explicitly so those facts have a place to live.
What an associative entity represents
Suppose an order can contain many products, and a product can appear on many orders. A single foreign-key column on Order or Product cannot represent all those links without repeating values or records. Instead, add an intermediate table such as OrderLine:
| OrderID | ProductID |
|---|---|
| 101 | 42 |
| 101 | 58 |
| 102 | 42 |
Each row identifies one order-product association. The order can now have multiple associated products, and a product can be associated with multiple orders. Microsoft’s [Access guidance on table relationships](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/guide-to-table-relationships-30446197-4fbe-457b-b992-2f6fb812b58f) uses an Order Details table to illustrate this pattern: the table stores the keys from both sides, and the paired keys can identify each line.
Relationally, the original many-to-many relationship is represented by two one-to-many relationships: one from Order to OrderLine, and one from Product to OrderLine. The table is variously called a junction, join, or associative table. “Bridge table” is also common, especially in analytics, though its modeling role can differ by context.

Decide whether the link needs its own attributes
If the row means only “these two records are linked,” the pair of endpoint keys may be enough. But facts about the relationship belong to the relationship, not either endpoint. An order line might need a quantity or agreed price; a person-event association might need an RSVP status, attendance status, or the time the person registered.
Use a minimal pairwise link when the association has no payload
For a pure link where a given pair may occur only once, the two foreign keys are a natural composite primary key. A uniqueness constraint on the pair prevents duplicate associations. Microsoft’s [EF Core many-to-many documentation](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/ef/core/modeling/relationships/many-to-many) shows a conventional join table with a composite key and explains that each join row represents one association.

Make the association explicit when it carries facts
When the relationship has attributes, give the join table a named entity type and add those fields there. For example, an EventAttendee entity could contain EventID, PersonID, RSVPStatus, and RegisteredAt. EF Core’s guidance recommends defining a join-entity type in cases where association payload properties are needed.
A surrogate identifier, such as EventAttendeeID, can be useful if other tables must reference the association directly or if it has an identity beyond the endpoint pair. Keep a separate uniqueness rule on the endpoint pair if duplicate links are still invalid. There is no single key strategy established for every schema; choose based on the association’s identity and how it will be referenced.

Choose implicit or explicit join modeling in an ORM
An ORM can hide a simple join table behind collection navigations, so application code can work with related objects without declaring a join type. That is convenient when the link has no additional data and does not need to be addressed directly.
Use an explicit join entity when the association has payload, needs its own validation or behavior, or will be referenced by other records. EF Core supports both patterns. Its documentation also cautions that an implicit join entity’s current internal representation may change; avoid depending on that representation unless it is deliberately configured. The database still needs the association table even when the ORM makes it less visible in code.

Model analytics relationships with grain and filters in mind
In a reporting model, a bridge table can connect dimensions that have many-to-many membership—for example, people and groups when a person may belong to several groups. Microsoft’s [Power BI guidance on many-to-many relationships](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/guidance/relationships-many-to-many) distinguishes dimension-to-dimension, fact-to-fact, and higher-grain fact scenarios; they should not be treated as interchangeable.
Dimension-to-dimension
For the classic dimension case, Power BI guidance favors a bridge table and one-to-many relationships, with a deliberate filter-propagation path. It generally discourages directly relating many-to-many dimension tables. Decide which direction filters should travel and verify that slicers and totals behave as users expect.

Fact-to-fact and higher-grain facts
Fact tables represent recorded events or measurements, and their grain determines what a row means. A direct many-to-many connection or a bridge that ignores grain can make an aggregate look plausible while counting or allocating values in an unintended way. Follow the treatment for the specific scenario in Power BI’s guidance, and test representative totals and filter combinations rather than assuming that a relationship that connects tables also yields an interpretable measure.
Check platform constraints before choosing a built-in relationship
Platform terminology can describe a feature with specific limits. Microsoft Dataverse’s built-in many-to-many relationship is suitable when the requirement is simply to track which records are linked. Its internal intersect table cannot be extended with extra relationship columns. If each link needs data such as RSVP or payment information, use a custom table instead. Microsoft’s [Dataverse complex relationships guidance](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-platform/architecture/reference-architectures/complex-relationships-dataverse) describes the custom-table pattern and notes that it offers more flexibility but should be used when relationship data is needed.
A custom table also means handling the additional setup and considering cascade behavior. If the built-in relationship has already been used and requirements later demand relationship fields, changing approaches requires a data migration; it is not simply a matter of adding a column to the built-in intersect table. Consider security and automation needs alongside the schema choice.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Does the link have facts of its own? If yes, define an explicit association entity and put those fields there.
- Can the same endpoint pair occur more than once? If no, enforce pair uniqueness; a composite key is a common choice for a pure pairwise association.
- Must other records refer to the link itself? If yes, consider giving the association its own identifier.
- Is this an analytics model? Establish table grain, filter direction, and aggregation meaning before selecting relationships.
- Does a platform’s built-in feature meet future needs? Check support for relationship attributes, security, automation, cascade behavior, and the cost of migrating if those needs change.
