There is no known size, distance, or material boundary where quantum physics suddenly stops and classical physics begins. Quantum effects become harder to observe when a system interacts with its surroundings, while our everyday world appears stable and classical at the scales and precision we typically experience. That transition is partly explained by decoherence; why measurements yield one definite result remains a separate, debated question.

What makes the quantum world look different?

Quantum theory allows alternatives to interfere. In a double-slit experiment, for example, a particle’s probability amplitudes can combine to produce an interference pattern when the paths remain coherent—that is, when no interaction has made information about which path it took available.

Real systems rarely stay isolated. A particle or object can interact with surrounding particles, light, or measuring equipment. Those interactions correlate the system with its environment and disperse information about alternatives into the surroundings. As a result, interference between those alternatives becomes inaccessible in practice. This loss of observable interference is called decoherence.

Jonathan Halliwell, a professor of theoretical physics at Imperial College London, describes environmental bombardment as something that “kills the interference.” That is a useful shorthand for the observable effect, not a claim that quantum information simply vanishes: as Halliwell also puts it, “The entanglement, the quantum stuff, is actually still there. It’s just scattered far and wide.” Quanta Magazine’s September 17, 2026 interview with Halliwell discusses this account.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Why don’t everyday objects show obvious interference?

Macroscopic objects interact with many parts of their environment, making it difficult to preserve the coherence needed to observe interference between alternatives. The key is not size by itself: it is the system’s interactions, the information those interactions carry, and the observable an experiment can resolve. Isolation and careful experimental design can preserve quantum effects that ordinary surroundings would quickly obscure.

So “classical” describes the stable, coarse-grained behavior that is accessible under particular conditions; it is not a separate realm separated from quantum physics by a universal cutoff. Which behavior is visible depends on how a system is prepared, how it interacts with its environment, and what measurements are made.

How experiments probe the transition

A controlled interferometer experiment

In a 2001 experiment, Bertet, Osnaghi, Rauschenbeutel and collaborators used an atomic double-pulse Ramsey interferometer. One beam-splitting element was a coherent microwave field stored in a cavity. By changing the field’s mean photon number, they changed the element’s effective character; the final atomic interference-fringe visibility increased with photon number. The result demonstrates a controlled change in observable interference in this particular setup, not a universal threshold at which every object becomes classical. The experiment appeared in Nature on May 10, 2001.

A theoretical route based on coarse-grained measurements

Decoherence is not the only way to describe the emergence of classical-looking behavior. Kofler and Brukner’s 2007 theoretical analysis considered restrictions on measurement accuracy. For a certain evolution, they found that coarse-grained measurements yield macrorealism and Newtonian laws from quantum theory; unrestricted measurement accuracy, by contrast, cannot support a classical description for arbitrarily large systems. This is a conditional theoretical result, not a general experimental law. Their paper was published in Physical Review Letters on November 2, 2007.

Does decoherence explain why measurements have definite outcomes?

Decoherence explains why interference between alternatives can become unobservable and helps account for why ordinary systems look classical. It does not, by itself, settle why an observer obtains one definite outcome rather than a combination of possible outcomes. That is part of the measurement problem, which remains a foundational question in quantum mechanics.

Accounts of the transition overlap but are not interchangeable. Environmental decoherence models interactions between a system and its surroundings. Coarse-grained approaches ask what can be observed at limited measurement precision, while decoherent- or consistent-histories formalisms provide a related but distinct framework. Interpretations and modifications—including Everett, Bohm, and GRW approaches—differ on what the quantum state represents and how definite outcomes should be understood. Decoherence is relevant to these discussions, but it does not make them one settled explanation. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy reviews decoherence alongside the measurement problem; Wojciech H. Zurek’s 2022 review surveys related approaches to the quantum-to-classical transition.
