Yes—Firebase Hosting can publish a built React single-page app (SPA), and you can start on Firebase’s no-cost Spark plan. Build your app, configure Hosting to serve the generated output directory, then deploy it with the Firebase CLI. “Free” is subject to Firebase’s current product quotas and plan rules, so check usage and pricing before assuming a project with real traffic or backend services will remain free.

What you need before deploying

  • A React app that builds into static files.
  • A Firebase project and the Firebase CLI. Firebase’s Hosting quickstart also notes that Cloud Shell is an option with the CLI preinstalled.
  • The exact directory your build command generates. There is no single output-directory name that applies to every React build setup.

How to deploy a React app to Firebase Hosting

  1. Build the app. Run the normal production build command for your project, then identify the directory containing the generated HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and other static assets.
  2. Create a Firebase project and install the CLI. Follow the Firebase Hosting quickstart to set up a project and the command-line tools. Authenticate the CLI as directed there.
  3. Initialize Hosting from your app directory. Run firebase init hosting, choose the Firebase project, and set the public directory to the build output found in step 1. Hosting’s configuration controls which local files are deployed.
  4. Enable SPA routing if needed. If routes are handled by React in the browser, configure a rewrite so requests for app routes serve index.html. Hosting supports rewrites, redirects, headers, and custom 404 pages; use a rewrite rather than publishing only the root page if direct visits to nested routes should load the app.
  5. Test before release. Use Firebase Hosting’s local testing or preview URL to check the production build, including a direct visit to a nested route if your app uses client-side routing.
  6. Deploy Hosting. From the project directory, run firebase deploy --only hosting. Firebase’s quickstart says the deployed content is served on project subdomains.

Does Firebase Hosting work with React Router?

It can serve a React app that uses client-side routing, but configure Hosting to rewrite app routes to index.html. Without that fallback, a request directly to a nested URL may not reach the React router as intended. Test both navigation from inside the app and a fresh load of a nested route on a preview deployment before releasing. Hosting’s configuration documentation describes rewrites.

Can you host a React app on Firebase for free?

Firebase offers Spark, a no-cost plan, and provisions web.app and firebaseapp.com subdomains at no cost. That does not mean every project or usage level is free indefinitely: Hosting has product-specific quotas, and billing consequences depend on the products enabled and how much they are used. Firebase identifies Blaze as pay-as-you-go and directs users to its pricing page for current product details. Check the applicable quotas and your project’s usage rather than assuming any volume of traffic, bandwidth, or storage will stay within no-cost allowances.

The plan applies at the Firebase project level across its apps. A simple static React site and an app that also uses server-side services are therefore different cost decisions. Cloud Functions and Cloud Run integrations require a Cloud Billing account even when a no-cost usage quota is available; associating billing with a Spark project upgrades it to Blaze. See Firebase’s Hosting serverless overview and Cloud Run integration documentation before adding dynamic services. The serverless overview documents a 60-second timeout for the described dynamic integration.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When to choose a different Firebase setup

  • Static React SPA: Firebase Hosting is designed for static and single-page apps. Configure the output directory and routing fallback, then deploy the built files. See Hosting documentation and Hosting use cases.
  • API routes or dynamic content: Evaluate Functions or Cloud Run integration and account for the billing-account requirement and documented request timeout. Those services are not necessary just to publish a static React bundle.
  • Next.js or Angular with framework-oriented hosting: Firebase App Hosting is a separate service, not the same simple static Hosting workflow. Its documentation describes GitHub integration and built-in support for Next.js and Angular, and requires Blaze during setup.

Automate pull-request previews with GitHub

Firebase Hosting’s GitHub integration can create preview deployments for pull requests and can optionally publish after a merge. One important caveat: preview deployments interact with the real backend resources of the Firebase project. Do not assume a preview is an isolated test environment; protect production data or arrange an appropriate separate project and backend setup before enabling previews.

Use a custom domain only if you need one

You can first publish on the free Firebase-provisioned subdomain. If the project needs a branded address, follow Firebase’s custom-domain setup to verify the domain and configure DNS. Firebase provisions SSL after verification and DNS setup; its documentation says rollout can take up to 24 hours after pointing DNS A records to Hosting.

Deployment checks and common snags

  • Wrong files appear or the site is blank: Confirm Hosting’s public directory points to generated production assets, not the source tree. Rebuild after changes and deploy again.
  • Nested routes fail on direct load: Add or verify the SPA rewrite to index.html, then test a nested URL directly in the browser.
  • Unexpected cost or billing prompt: Check which Firebase products are enabled, the project plan, current quotas, and usage on the pricing page. Dynamic integrations have billing-account requirements distinct from static Hosting.
  • Preview changes affect backend data: Remember that GitHub preview deployments use real project backend resources; use protected or separate resources where needed.
  • Unusual executable files are rejected: Firebase’s Hosting FAQ says Spark projects created on or after September 28, 2023 block certain executable file types for Windows, Android, and Apple. This is unlikely to affect an ordinary web bundle, but may matter if the deployed directory includes those files.

The same FAQ documents a maximum of 36 Hosting sites per project.
