MXM graphics cards appear in selected mobile workstations and a smaller number of other specialized systems—not in laptops or desktops generally. Documented examples include Dell’s Precision M4800 (MXM Type A), M6800 (Type B), and 7720 (Type B), plus HP’s Z1 all-in-one workstation. A model name alone is not enough to establish upgrade compatibility: the MXM generation, card type, cooling, power, firmware, and display wiring all matter.
Verified computers that use MXM graphics
The examples below are supported by the manufacturers’ documentation. They illustrate MXM use, not a complete catalog of every system ever made with the interface.

These examples span mobile workstations and an all-in-one desktop. They do not establish that ordinary desktop towers commonly include a native MXM socket, nor do they settle every historical gaming laptop, industrial computer, or regional configuration.
What MXM means—and what it does not
MXM stands for Mobile PCI Express Module. The MXM specification describes it as “a standard graphics interface for PCI Express® systems” and lists notebooks, servers, mobile workstations, and alternative-form-factor PCs among its intended applications. MXM 3.1 specification

It is a removable graphics-module interface, not a universal GPU socket. A computer must be designed for a compatible module, and sharing the MXM label does not guarantee that two cards can be swapped between systems.
Are MXM Type A and Type B interchangeable?
No—not as a general assumption. Type A and Type B are distinct form factors associated with different performance, power, and thermal targets. The documented Dell examples show Type A in the M4800 and Type B in the M6800 and 7720. Even matching the nominal type and generation does not prove a card will work in a particular host. Check the computer maker’s supported parts and configuration information rather than relying on the connector or product listing alone.
Can you upgrade a laptop GPU with an MXM card?
Sometimes, but only when the exact system and replacement module are compatible. An OEM-listed GPU option is stronger evidence than a card that merely appears to fit. A physical insertion does not establish that the computer can power, cool, initialize, or route display output from the replacement.

Check before buying a replacement
- Host model and generation: Confirm the exact computer, not just its product family. Compare its documented graphics options and supported parts.
- MXM generation and type: Verify the card’s specification and ensure the host supports that version and form factor.
- Dimensions and mounting: Compare the module outline, screw locations, and heatsink contact points. A card can have a compatible connector but an incompatible physical layout.
- Power and cooling: Confirm the system’s power delivery and thermal solution are suitable for the candidate GPU.
- Firmware and display routing: Check whether the host firmware/VBIOS supports the card and how its display signals are routed.
- Evidence quality: Distinguish manufacturer-listed configurations from undocumented modifications. A successful installation in another model is not proof of compatibility in yours.
Dell’s manuals are useful examples of the detail to look for: they identify MXM types and list graphics configurations for each workstation, rather than implying that every MXM card is interchangeable.

MXM is not limited to notebooks. The specification includes servers and alternative-form-factor PCs, and HP documents MXM graphics in the Z1 all-in-one workstation. Those examples show desktop-form-factor uses without establishing a broad class of conventional tower PCs with native MXM slots.

A desktop can also work with an adapter-based arrangement. ADLINK lists a PCIe-to-MXM adapter for evaluating its modules; that is a specific evaluation use case, not evidence that a standard desktop motherboard has an MXM socket. How to identify MXM support in your computer
- Find the exact model and generation on the computer’s label or in its system information.
- Open the manufacturer’s service or technical documentation and look for the graphics-module type and supported graphics configurations.
- Compare that information with the replacement module’s MXM generation, type, dimensions, mounting points, and cooling requirements.
- Confirm power, firmware/VBIOS, and display-output compatibility for that host configuration.
- If the documentation does not identify the proposed card as supported, treat the upgrade as unverified rather than assuming that MXM branding guarantees a fit.
