MX Linux may be worth trying if your PC does not meet Windows 11’s hardware requirements or you want a Linux desktop—but switching makes sense only if MX supports the apps, devices, and workflows you rely on. MX-23.3 “Libretto” was announced on May 19, 2024; MX-23.4 followed on September 15, 2024, so 23.3 is a specific older refresh, not the latest MX-23 installation image. Check the 23.3 announcement, the later 23.4 announcement, and the MX project’s current downloads and update information before installing.
Why consider MX Linux instead of Windows 11?
The strongest reasons are practical rather than universal claims that one operating system is better. MX Linux is a Debian-based desktop system that may suit you if Windows 11 will not install on your computer, if you want to try a different desktop and software ecosystem, or if you want to test Linux from a live USB before replacing your current setup.
Your PC does not meet Windows 11’s requirements
Microsoft’s requirements documentation, updated July 14, 2026, lists a compatible 64-bit processor running at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable, TPM 2.0, DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver, and a high-definition display at least 9 inches diagonally. Windows 11 Home also requires an internet connection and a Microsoft Account for first-use setup; Microsoft notes that internet access is needed for updates and some features. Check the current Windows 11 requirements for the edition and setup rules that apply to you.
MX Linux’s installation manual states minimums of a modern 64-bit Intel or AMD CPU, 1 GB of RAM, and 6 GB of free disk space for an installed system. It lists 4 GB of free space for live USB use. These are documentation minimums, not recommendations for comfortable performance or guarantees that your hardware will work. The two operating systems’ figures describe different things—Windows eligibility requirements and MX installation minimums—so they should not be treated as an apples-to-apples performance comparison. You want to try Linux before committing
MX’s manual describes booting from live USB media, offering a way to explore the desktop before installing to the internal drive. A live session can help you check whether the interface suits you and whether key components work, but results depend on your boot configuration and exact hardware. Do not assume that Wi-Fi, graphics, sound, printers, or other devices will all work just because the system boots.
You prefer MX’s desktop and tools
Desktop preference is personal. Try the interface and the tasks you perform every day—finding files, changing settings, connecting devices, and installing software—rather than assuming that a different look will automatically improve your workflow.

What could make switching a poor fit?
Essential applications may not be available
List the software you need for work, school, creative projects, communication, and accessibility. Ask each publisher whether it supports Linux and check whether a supported Linux version or acceptable alternative covers the features you depend on. A replacement that handles basic documents may still be unsuitable if you need a particular plugin, file format, collaboration feature, or assistive-technology integration.
Hardware support varies by exact model
Check vendor documentation and reports for your specific printer, scanner, Wi-Fi adapter, graphics hardware, docking station, audio interface, and other peripherals. “The printer works on Linux” is not enough if the statement refers to another model or omits scanning, duplex printing, or a feature you use.

Games and launchers need individual checks
Check each game, launcher, anti-cheat system, subscription, and controller separately. The available release and requirements materials do not establish broad game compatibility, so do not base a decision on a blanket assumption that your library will work.
Changing systems takes preparation
Replacing Windows can involve partition changes, file migration, reinstalling applications, and learning a new way to manage software. Back up important files and confirm access to account credentials, encryption recovery keys, and installation media before changing partitions or removing Windows.

How to decide before installing
- Check Windows eligibility on your PC. Compare its processor, TPM, firmware, memory, storage, graphics, and display with Microsoft’s current requirements. Identify the specific requirement it fails rather than relying on a general “old PC” label.
- Write down what must keep working. Include essential applications, file formats, peripherals, accessibility tools, games, accounts, and any work or school systems. Verify support with the relevant publishers and device vendors.
- Try MX from live USB if your setup allows it. Follow the MX manual’s installation guidance and test the tasks and hardware that matter before installing. The manual’s 4 GB free-space figure is its stated minimum for live USB use, not a recommendation for a particular drive model.
- Compare the workflow, not just the requirements. Consider whether you are comfortable with MX’s desktop, application installation approach, and the effort of moving files and rebuilding your setup.
- Check the release and protect your data. Confirm the current MX download and update information, then make a verified backup and retain any recovery information you may need before changing your Windows installation.
What “MX Linux 23.3 Libretto” means today
MX Linux announced 23.3 on May 19, 2024 as the third refresh of MX-23, with bug fixes and software updates. The project announced MX-23.4, with updated installation images, on September 15, 2024. Those dates establish that 23.3 is not the latest MX-23 image documented here; they do not establish a current end-of-support date for 23.3. Check current project downloads and update information rather than assuming an older image remains the right one to install.
