If Microsoft Store says “You need administrator privileges to pause updates on this device” even though your Windows account is an administrator, first check whether the PC is managed by work or school. Then try resetting Microsoft Store. These steps may not resolve the problem: users have reported the same message after checking their admin access and resetting the Store, and a confirmed cause or universal fix has not been established.
What the message means
The reported message—“Can’t pause updates You need administrator privileges to pause updates on this device”—appears in Microsoft Store under Settings > App updates when someone tries to pause or disable app updates. It concerns Store app updates; it does not, by itself, indicate a problem with Windows Update.
Administrator membership does not guarantee that this particular Store action will work. A Microsoft Q&A user reported seeing the message on Windows 10 Pro 22H2 despite having an administrator account. Similar user reports mention Windows 11, but these reports do not establish how common the issue is.
Try these checks in order
1. Confirm the account you are using
Check that you are signed in to the Windows account you expect and that it has administrator access. If it is a standard account, ask an administrator to make the Store setting change. This is a useful first check, though it does not explain cases where the signed-in user already has administrator access.

2. Check for work or school management
If the PC is connected to a work or school account, ask your organization’s IT administrator whether a device policy restricts Microsoft Store settings. Management is one possible explanation, not a confirmed cause of this message. Do not disconnect a work or school account just to test the setting; doing so may affect access to organizational services or device management.
3. Reset Microsoft Store
One suggested troubleshooting step is to reset the Store cache. Press Windows key + R, enter wsreset.exe, and press Enter. Let the process finish, then reopen Microsoft Store and check Settings > App updates.

This is an attempt, not a guaranteed repair. In the reported Windows 10 Pro 22H2 case, running wsreset.exe and restarting the PC did not clear the message.
4. Report the problem through Microsoft Store
If the setting still fails, use the Store profile menu and select Send feedback > Report a problem. A Microsoft Q&A community response recommends reporting the issue. That recommendation is not confirmation that Microsoft has acknowledged the problem or provided a repair schedule.

Why there may not be a confirmed fix
A confirmed root cause has not been established in the available reports. A Microsoft Q&A Independent Advisor described it tentatively as a possible bug; that is an individual assessment, not an official Microsoft diagnosis. Community discussion has also speculated about Store components, permissions, or policy, without confirming which—if any—is responsible in a particular case.
A discussion suggests changing permissions on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInstallService and its State subkey. One user said this restored the pause function on their machine, but the cause was not confirmed. Granting broad permissions such as Full Control to Users changes system-wide registry security and is not an established or official fix. Do not make this change casually; consult qualified support if you are considering it.

A separate suggestion to enable the Group Policy setting “Turn off Automatic Download and Install of updates” changes update behavior; it does not demonstrate that the Store pause control has been repaired. The discussion also notes that gpedit.msc was unavailable on one Windows Home device, so this suggestion is not suitable as a universal fix.
What to expect
If you have confirmed your account, checked with IT where relevant, and tried the Store reset, the remaining evidence does not point to a reliable user-side repair. The reports show that the error can persist even for people who say they are administrators. Reporting it through Store feedback is the recommended next step; neither a confirmed diagnosis nor a fix timeline is established.
