Start with the games you most want to play, not a general ranking of PC and console. Check each title’s official platform announcement, then compare the full cost and setup for the options that support it. Upcoming-game plans can change, so verify the details again before buying.
Check whether your upcoming games support each platform
Make a shortlist of the games you expect to play, then confirm the announced platforms and release dates on each game’s official publisher or developer page. A release calendar can help you discover titles, but it should not be the final word on a purchase decision.
- List your priority games. Include titles you are likely to buy or play soon, rather than every game that looks interesting.
- Use a release calendar to find candidates. GamesComingOut.com’s 2026 calendar covers releases across PS5, Xbox, Switch, and PC. GamesRadar’s roundup is another discovery aid.
- Confirm each title with its publisher or developer. For example, EA’s Coming Soon page lists release dates and platforms for its upcoming games. Do not assume a PC or console version exists unless it has been announced.
- Recheck before purchase. Release dates and platform plans for unreleased games may change.
If a title you consider essential is announced for only one of the platforms you are weighing, that can settle the choice. If your shortlist is supported across them, compare the remaining trade-offs.
Compare the complete setup cost
Use current prices in your region and count what you will actually need—not just the computer or console. Include games and any subscription you expect to use, as well as missing equipment.

- Hardware: Compare the price of a gaming PC that meets the requirements of your games with the console model you would buy.
- Display and peripherals: Add a monitor, television, controller, keyboard, mouse, or headset only if you need one. Existing equipment may already cover part of the setup.
- Games and subscriptions: Estimate the titles you expect to purchase and any subscription costs relevant to your multiplayer or game-library use. Check current terms for the specific service and region.
There is no universal cost winner established here: the result depends on local prices, your existing equipment, the games you buy, and the services you use. Avoid choosing a PC configuration before you know the titles and budget it must serve.
Match PC components to game requirements
A PC is a flexible choice when you value PC releases and computer use beyond gaming, but its capabilities depend on the exact components you select. For each announced PC game, compare the official minimum and recommended requirements with the processor, graphics card, memory, and storage of the particular computer. Requirements for unreleased games may not yet be available; without them, you cannot confirm that a specific PC will run the game as intended.

For either PC or console, look for performance details for the specific game rather than inferring performance from the platform name alone. A platform label by itself does not establish how a particular game will perform.
Check console model, media format, and library access
Console choices can differ in storage and in whether a disc drive is included. Sony’s PS5 product page lists a model with 1 TB storage and Blu-ray disc play, and a PS5 Digital Edition with 825 GB storage and no included disc drive. These are the configurations described on that page; check the current listing and local availability before buying.

Sony also says PS5 consoles are backward compatible with PS4 games. Its page currently states: “From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this console.” If buying physical PlayStation games matters to you, confirm that this notice is still current and consider how it affects the titles you expect to buy.
For any platform, consider the games you already own, backward compatibility, digital storefront and account restrictions, and the terms of any subscription library. Do not assume that a library or subscription provides permanent access to every game.

- Lean toward PC if your priority games are announced for PC, you want a computer’s flexibility, and you are prepared to select components against the games’ requirements.
- Lean toward console if your shortlist is supported on that console and its standard hardware and play setup suit your preferences.
- Pause the purchase if an essential game’s platform or requirements are not yet confirmed. Recheck its official listing before committing.
