For the vintage Mobile Pentium III processors discussed here, Micro-PGA2 and “495 pin” describe the same package family in different ways: Micro-PGA2 is the package name, while 495 pin is its pin-count description. That does not make every 495-pin processor compatible with every laptop that uses Micro-PGA2.
What do Micro-PGA2 and 495 pin mean?
Scott Mueller’s Upgrading and Repairing Laptops, Second Edition, defines PGA2 as a “495-pin micro-PGA2 (pin grid array 2) form factor.” In other words, Micro-PGA2 names the package/form factor; 495 pin describes the number of pins associated with it. For the cited Mobile Pentium III PGA2 processors, these labels refer to the same package family. Mueller’s technical reference
The labels are not interchangeable in every context. Mueller separately identifies BGA2 as a 495-pin BGA2 package and MMC-2 as a Mobile Module Connector-2. A shared pin count does not make those different package or module types equivalent.
Which Mobile Pentium III examples use PGA2?
The technical reference lists the Mobile Pentium III SL53L at 850 MHz and the SL53S at 1000 MHz as PGA2 parts. The original question also identifies SL4JX as Micro-PGA2. These examples help explain the terminology, but do not establish that a particular processor will work in a particular laptop.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Mueller lists the SL53S with 34.0 W power, a 16.1 W SpeedStep figure, and 1.7/1.35 V. These are specifications for that model as reported in the Second Edition reference; the excerpt does not establish the book’s publication year. They are not general specifications for all Micro-PGA2 processors.
Does a 495-pin processor fit or work in a Micro-PGA2 laptop?
Not necessarily. A pin-count label alone does not confirm the processor’s exact pin arrangement or keying, electrical requirements, BIOS support, or whether the laptop can handle its thermal load. The 2006 forum discussion raises concerns about these differences and includes one user’s upgrade report, but that anecdote is not manufacturer certification or a compatibility guarantee. Check compatibility before buying or installing
- Identify the laptop. Record its exact model and, where available, motherboard or board revision.
- Find platform-specific support information. Consult the laptop’s service documentation or CPU support information, including any BIOS requirements.
- Verify the complete processor identity. Match the full model and S-spec, not just a seller’s “495 pin” description. Examples such as SL4JX, SL53L, and SL53S are not interchangeable merely because of their package terminology.
- Compare platform requirements. Check package, front-side bus, supported voltage, processor power and thermal requirements, and the laptop’s cooling capacity.
- Proceed only when the laptop documentation supports the combination. A processor can belong to the right package family and still fail to boot or exceed the platform’s supported limits.
The cited reference and forum discussion do not provide a universal upgrade list for laptop models. Compatibility has to be established for the particular machine; a listing that says “495 pin” is not enough to choose a processor.
