Use the console’s own menu, enable the network setting downloads need, and avoid cutting power while the system is active. This is not a promise that hardware can never fail, and the guidance here does not establish how Xbox models behave.
What “rest mode” and “sleep mode” mean for downloads
PlayStation calls its low-power state Rest Mode; Nintendo calls its equivalent sleep mode. These are console-managed states, not the same as unplugging the system. The manufacturers’ support instructions describe background downloading as a supported function when the relevant conditions are met; they do not report that routine downloads in these modes damage the console or its drive.
The available official guidance does not quantify SSD or hard-drive wear from overnight downloads, compare drive wear between low-power and awake downloads, or provide a damage rate. It therefore supports a practical safety answer, not a guarantee about every component, environment, or hardware failure.
Platform-specific requirements
| System | Mode and download support | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Rest Mode; downloads and updates can proceed with the relevant settings enabled. | Enable internet connectivity in Rest Mode. Sony notes that using more Rest Mode features consumes more power than choosing the lowest-power state. |
| PlayStation 4 | Rest Mode; the system can stay connected and download or upload data. | Enable the option to stay connected to the internet in Rest Mode. |
| Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED | Sleep mode; software can download while the console is asleep. | Keep it connected to the internet and ensure sufficient space in system memory or on the inserted microSD card. |
| Xbox | Not established by the official guidance cited here. | Check the support instructions for your specific Xbox model and power mode rather than assuming PlayStation or Nintendo settings apply. |
How to leave a download running safely
PS5 or PS4
- Open the console’s Power menu and choose Enter Rest Mode.
- In the power-saving or Rest Mode settings, enable the option to stay connected to the internet. The exact setting presentation can vary by console generation and software version; Sony’s power-saving settings instructions cover both PS5 and PS4.
- Let the console enter Rest Mode through its controls. Do not disconnect AC power while the power indicator is lit or blinking.
Nintendo Switch family
- Connect the Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED to the internet and confirm there is enough available system or microSD-card storage.
- Put the console into sleep mode using its normal controls, then allow time for the download to proceed.
- If progress stops, follow Nintendo’s troubleshooting steps: check for a system update, confirm the internet connection and signal, and free storage space if needed. Nintendo also suggests trying the download while the console is awake if sleep-mode troubleshooting does not resolve it. See Nintendo’s Switch sleep-mode download troubleshooting.
What can actually put data or hardware at risk?
The clearest documented risk is interrupting power during an active PlayStation power state. Sony warns that disconnecting AC power while the indicator is lit or blinking can result in data loss, corruption, or damage. Use the system’s power controls and wait for it to power down before disconnecting it; this warning is about abrupt power loss, not ordinary Rest Mode downloading.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For Nintendo Switch, Nintendo says leaving the console docked or connected to AC power overnight, including after it is fully charged, will not harm the battery. That statement addresses battery charging; it should not be read as a blanket claim that every component is immune to all damage. Nintendo’s separate download guidance focuses on connection and storage when a sleep-mode download stalls.
What to do if you are worried about drive wear
There is no evidence in the cited manufacturer guidance that a routine low-power download damages an SSD or hard drive, and no published wear comparison or failure statistic is provided there. Avoid treating ordinary overnight downloading as a reason to buy a replacement drive, cooling accessory, or other hardware. If you encounter an actual storage error, follow the support steps for that console and its model rather than assuming Rest Mode itself caused the problem.

Does this answer apply to Xbox or Switch 2?
Do not carry the PlayStation or Switch settings instructions over to Xbox: power-mode names and download behavior can be model-specific, and the official Xbox instructions needed to substantiate them are not established here.
Nintendo has a current support page titled Download Does Not Progress While in Sleep Mode on Nintendo Switch 2, but the detailed requirements are not established here. For Switch 2, use that model’s own support guidance instead of assuming every Switch-family detail above applies.
