To daisy-chain case fans, connect compatible fans through their built-in pass-through connectors or a fan splitter, then connect the chain to a motherboard fan header or controller. Before powering on, add the fans’ maximum current ratings and confirm the total is within the limit for that exact header. There is no universal safe number of fans per header.
Check the fans and motherboard header first
Look up each fan’s maximum input current and the specific motherboard header’s current limit in their manuals or specifications. Header limits vary by board and may vary between headers on the same board. Noctua cites 1 A as a common fan-header limit, but that is an example—not a guarantee for your motherboard. Use the rating in your board’s manual.
Add the maximum current ratings of every fan that will draw power through the header. Keep the combined total below the header’s limit. For example, Noctua says three NF-A12x25 PWM fans rated at up to 0.14 A each draw 0.42 A together; that fits the 1 A header assumed in its example. Do not turn that example into a general fan-count rule: other fans can draw more current.

Connect the fans in a compatible chain
Use built-in pass-through connectors
If the fan is designed with a pass-through connector, connect its fan lead to the next fan’s matching connector. Connect the chain’s lead to the motherboard header or fan controller, following the fan maker’s instructions. Pass-through or PST connectors are intended to make compatible fan chaining straightforward; they do not increase the power capacity of the header.
Use a splitter if the fans lack pass-through connectors
A compatible Y-splitter or multi-way fan splitter lets multiple fans share one header. Check that the connector type and wiring suit the fans and header. A splitter shares the header’s available capacity; it does not add capacity.

For installation, shut down and turn off the computer before connecting fans. CORSAIR’s RS Series instructions also say to align the connector guides with the guide on the header. See the CORSAIR RS Series installation instructions for that series’ connection guidance.
Set the control mode and understand RPM reporting
Check the motherboard manual for the header’s supported fan-control mode and set it accordingly. A 4-pin PWM fan can physically fit a 3-pin header, but CORSAIR warns that this pairing loses PWM control. Confirm the intended mode rather than assuming the fan will be controlled the same way on every header.

Fans in a chain can share a control signal, while the motherboard may receive a tachometer (RPM) signal from only one fan. For its F14 PWM PST, ARCTIC says speed monitoring is done on the first fan in the chain. If the motherboard displays one RPM value, that does not necessarily mean the other fans are disconnected. See the ARCTIC F14 PWM PST manual for the model-specific behavior.
When to use a SATA-powered fan hub
If the fans’ combined current exceeds the header’s rating, or you want to avoid drawing their full power through the motherboard header, use a compatible powered fan hub or distribute the fans across headers. A SATA-powered hub can draw fan power from the power supply while using a motherboard connection for control. It still has its own total and per-port limits, so check the hub’s documentation and keep the load within those limits.

For one specific example, Noctua rates the NA-FH1 for up to 4.5 A total when powered via SATA. When it is powered only through its 4-pin input, the input’s limit applies; if that input is connected to a 1 A motherboard header, the header can constrain the available power. This guidance covers fan-motor power and PWM control, not RGB or ARGB lighting. Lighting connectors have their own compatibility and power requirements. Check the fan, lighting-controller and motherboard manuals before connecting lighting cables; do not assume their limits are the same as a fan header’s.

Quick setup checklist
- Identify each fan’s connector type and maximum input current.
- Find the current limit and supported control mode for the exact motherboard header.
- Add the fans’ maximum current ratings and compare the total with that header’s limit.
- Use compatible built-in pass-through connectors or a suitable fan splitter.
- Power off the computer before installation, and align connector guides as directed by the manufacturer.
- If the header limit would be exceeded, split the load across suitable headers or use a powered hub within its documented total and per-port ratings.
- Expect a shared tachometer connection to report only one fan’s RPM where the fan design provides only one speed signal.
