If your app uses React Router, try its built-in <Link prefetch="intent"> first; a custom component is mainly useful when your router has no suitable feature or you need behavior it does not provide.
What “prefetch before you click” means
Prefetching starts selected destination work before navigation. With an intent trigger, a pointer hover or keyboard focus signals that the user may follow the link; the click still performs navigation. Prefetching does not necessarily fetch every page resource or all destination data, and whether the work is reused after the click depends on the router and its cache behavior.
This is different from React itself automatically prefetching application routes. React provides a DOM <link> component for resources and metadata, while route-specific prefetch behavior is offered by router libraries. See the React DOM <link> reference.
Choose a trigger that fits the links
| Approach | When work starts | When it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Intent | React Router starts on hover or focus. TanStack Router supports hover or touch start; its documented hover/focus delay is 50 ms by default, while touch intent is immediate. | Use when interaction is a useful signal that someone may navigate, without eagerly starting work for every link. |
| Viewport | Starts when a link enters the visible area. TanStack Router uses Intersection Observer; React Router describes viewport prefetch as useful for mobile. | Consider for visible links in a list or for links whose visibility is a reasonable indicator of likely navigation. |
| Render | Starts as soon as the link renders. | Use only when the destination is likely enough to justify starting work before any interaction. |
| None or custom | React Router defaults to no prefetch. A custom implementation can add a different trigger if the router’s options do not meet the need. | Prefer no prefetch when the signal is weak or the extra work is not worthwhile; custom behavior adds maintenance and can duplicate requests. |
These options and their behavior are documented by React Router and TanStack Router. They are router features, not universal browser guarantees.

Use the router’s link feature when it fits
React Router
For a React Router app, start with <Link prefetch="intent">. React Router defines intent as prefetching when the user hovers or focuses the link. Its choices also include render, viewport, and none. The router documents inserting prefetch-related HTML <link rel="prefetch"> tags after the anchor; this can affect structural CSS selectors such as :last-child. The documentation recommends :last-of-type for that situation. Consult the current Link API for the API used by your installed version.
If you want to prefetch independently of a particular link—for example, as a user types into a search field—React Router also provides PrefetchPageLinks, which can render prefetch and module-preload tags.

TanStack Router
Before building a second layer, compare TanStack Router’s preload="intent", viewport, and render options. According to its preloading guide, hover/focus and viewport work starts after 50 ms by default, pending intent work is cancelled when hover or focus ends or the link leaves the viewport, and touch intent is immediate. Treat these as documented defaults, not guarantees for every configuration.
TanStack also documents built-in loader-cache defaults of 30 seconds for freshness and 5 minutes for unused retention (documentation accessed 2026). Freshness and retention are separate policies: retained results may be reused while fresh, and unused entries become eligible for pruning during later cache reconciliation. These are configuration defaults, not measured performance results.

Build a custom intent link only for a real gap
If the existing router does not offer the trigger or behavior you need, a custom component can listen for intent and start narrowly scoped work. Preserve a real anchor as the interactive target rather than replacing it with a click-only element. React Router describes its Link as a progressively enhanced <a href> wrapper; its versioned 6.30.4 documentation likewise describes an accessible anchor with a real href. See the React Router 6.30.4 Link reference.
Keeping the anchor preserves its normal link semantics, including keyboard interaction, context-menu actions, opening in a new tab, and fallback navigation. Attach intent listeners without making prefetch the navigation action itself. Avoid starting duplicate work if the router or another layer already handles the same destination.

Account for resource use and uncertain gains
Prefetch can make selected work available earlier, which may improve perceived responsiveness when the user follows the link and the result can be reused. It also spends resources: users may never visit the destination, and unused results can occupy cache space. Choose which links to prefetch and which trigger is strong enough to justify the cost rather than enabling eager work indiscriminately.
No benchmark in the cited documentation establishes a particular speedup for a custom component. “Instant navigation” is an aspiration used in router documentation, not a guarantee for every route, browser, network, or cache state. Measure your own app before claiming a latency or conversion improvement.
