A static IP address is an IP address intended to stay the same over time. A dynamic IP address can change when a network assigns or renews it. The difference is about whether the address is kept stable—not whether it is public or private.
How a static IP address works
Devices and networks use IP addresses to identify where traffic should go. With a static assignment, the address is kept consistent. With a dynamic assignment, a network commonly uses DHCP to assign an address that may change later. Some static configurations are entered manually, while others are managed by a provider or network administrator. The exact method depends on the service and network.
The terms describe address stability, not address reachability. A static IP could be public or local to a network. In particular, manually assigning a fixed address to a device inside your home or office does not change the public address your internet provider assigns to your connection.
Static vs. dynamic IP addresses
| Address type | What it means | Typical assignment |
|---|---|---|
| Static | Intended to remain the same over time | May be configured manually or managed by a provider or network administrator; details vary |
| Dynamic | Can change over time | Commonly assigned using DHCP and may be renewed or changed by the network |
A dynamic address is not necessarily changing constantly; it is simply not guaranteed to remain fixed. Conversely, a static assignment is meant to provide stability, but availability and terms depend on the provider or network.

When a static IP address is useful
A static address can help when an outside user, device, or service needs to connect to a system at a predictable IP address. Common examples include:
- Hosting a web, email, or other internet-accessible server.
- Allowing an external system to connect to a network by IP address, such as where access rules use an IP allowlist.
- Some VPN or remote-access setups that expect a consistent endpoint.
These are possible use cases, not universal requirements: a particular server, VPN, or remote-access service may work with a dynamic address or a domain name, depending on its configuration. Spectrum Business frames the decision around whether outside users need to reach systems hosted internally (Spectrum Business guidance).

Do you need a static IP address?
For everyday browsing, email, video streaming, and VoIP, a static address is usually unnecessary. Google Fiber support says, “Most Fiber customers do not need any static IP addresses.” That guidance concerns Google Fiber customers; check your own provider’s service terms for availability and requirements (Google Fiber support).
Consider a provider-assigned static IP if a specific application or administrator requires a stable public endpoint. Before requesting one, establish whether the requirement is for a public address on the internet connection or a fixed local address for a device. Those solve different problems.

Dynamic DNS as an alternative
Dynamic DNS can update a domain-name record when a dynamic IP address changes. An outside user can then connect using the name rather than relying on a fixed IP. It does not make the underlying address static, and whether it works depends on the hosting service, router, and provider network. Google Fiber describes Dynamic DNS as an option for hosting in many cases without a static address (Google Fiber support).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to check before requesting or configuring one
- Purpose: Identify the service that needs a stable endpoint and whether it requires a fixed IP or can use a domain name.
- Address context: Confirm whether you need an internet-facing address from your ISP or a stable local address for a device.
- Provider terms: Check availability, allocation method, plan requirements, and support with your ISP. Pricing and eligibility vary.
- Router and network setup: Ask whether your router needs configuration. Setup can differ for a single static address versus a routed subnet with multiple addresses; Google Fiber’s instructions are provider-specific, not a universal rule (Google Fiber setup guidance).
- Change implications: Confirm with the provider whether switching service or changing plans affects the address or access to hosted services.
AT&T and WatchGuard also describe static addresses as fixed or persistent and dynamic addresses as changeable or temporarily assigned, while configuration details depend on the network (AT&T support; WatchGuard documentation).
