You can date more than one candidate, but marrying someone changes how gifts to other candidates can affect your spouse’s friendship.
How to go from friendship to marriage
- Build friendship to 8 hearts. Romance candidates’ last two hearts are locked until you give them a bouquet.
- Buy and give a bouquet. The morning after a candidate reaches 8 hearts, Pierre sends a letter and starts selling bouquets for 200g at his General Store. Giving one makes the candidate your boyfriend or girlfriend and unlocks further friendship. Bouquets can be given to candidates of any gender.
- Reach 10 hearts. Continue building friendship with your partner. At 10 hearts, you can propose with a Mermaid’s Pendant.
- Buy the pendant from the Old Mariner. It costs 5,000g and is sold on rainy days. In winter, the Old Mariner appears only if you use a Rain Totem. You must have upgraded the farmhouse at least once and be able to reach the Tide Pool area of the Beach.
- Wait for the wedding. It normally takes place in the morning three days after the proposal. A town-square event or Green Rain delays it.
Pierre sums up the bouquet step in the game: “If you want to show someone that you’re romantically interested, you’ve got to give them one of my beautiful flower bouquets.” Mayor Lewis explains the proposal item: “If there comes a day that you want to ask for someone’s hand in marriage, you’ll need to give them a ‘Mermaid’s Pendant’.” These are in-game character lines, not real-world statements by the developer. How hearts, friendship, and decay work
Each heart represents 250 friendship points. Before a bouquet, a candidate’s meter stops at 8 hearts; after you start dating, it can rise to 10. An undated candidate at the 8-heart cap does not decay below that cap, and dating candidates stop decaying at 10 hearts. Spouse friendship can rise to 14 hearts, but it decays if you do not make contact.
Without a greeting, ordinary villagers generally lose 2 friendship points per day, dating candidates 10, and spouses 20. For most non-spouse relationships, decay stops at the applicable full-heart cap. Stardew Valley Wiki: Friendship

Give gifts strategically
You can generally give each villager one gift per day and two per week, plus an additional gift on their birthday. A spouse can receive one gift per day. Gift preference matters more than choosing a universally convenient item: check the character’s Gift Log and schedule before planning what to give and when.
- Loved gifts normally add 80 friendship points; liked gifts add 45.
- Birthday gifts multiply preference points by eight, while Feast of the Winter Star gifts multiply them by five.
- Gift quality can add a multiplier to the points from liked or loved gifts.
These point values describe the game’s friendship mechanics; they are not measures of player behavior. Individual characters have different preferences, so a single gift recommendation will not be best for everyone. Stardew Valley Wiki: Friendship

Dating multiple candidates: benefits and risks
There is no friendship penalty just for giving bouquets to multiple candidates. However, dating all six candidates of one gender can trigger a Group Heart event in which they may give you the cold shoulder for one week. A Wilted Bouquet ends a dating relationship and immediately lowers that candidate’s meter to 5 hearts. Stardew Valley Wiki: Marriage
Once married, your spouse may become jealous if you give a non-hated gift to another marriage candidate of the same gender who previously received a bouquet. The wiki documents a 20–40% chance, depending on daily luck, and a 30-point friendship penalty if jealousy occurs. Birthday gifts are exempt from this check, and delivery quests do not count as gifts.

What changes after marriage
Your spouse moves into the farmhouse, gets a unique room and outdoor area, and may help with farm chores or give you food. Those activities are not guaranteed on a fixed schedule for every spouse. Friendship with a spouse can grow to 14 hearts.
If you have upgraded the farmhouse a second time to add the nursery, your spouse may ask whether you want to have or adopt a child. Opposite-gender couples have biological children; same-gender couples adopt. Stardew Valley Wiki: Marriage

Who can you romance?
The marriage roster reviewed by the Stardew Valley Wiki lists twelve candidates: six bachelors and six bachelorettes. A February 26, 2026 post in the official forums announced Clint and Sandy as new marriage candidates for version 1.7, but the reviewed Villagers and Marriage pages still list them outside the candidate roster. Treat them as announced for 1.7, not playable, unless an up-to-date release source confirms the update and roster.

Choosing a candidate
There is no evidence-based universal “easiest” or “best” partner in the sources reviewed. A useful choice depends on the relationship story you want and practical details such as a character’s loved gifts, schedule and accessibility, and heart-event conditions. Check individual character pages for those specifics rather than assuming the full roster shares one gift strategy or that one character is objectively easiest to romance.
What version 1.6 changed
The developer’s 1.6 changelog lists dialogue and event refinements related to relationships: custom gift reactions, dynamic dialogue, custom Flower Dance acceptance dialogue, and restored spouse and wedding lines.
