A team identifies an opportunity, tests a planned change, checks the results, and decides whether to adopt it, adjust it, or try something else.
What continuous process improvement means
The American Society for Quality (ASQ) defines continuous improvement as “the ongoing improvement of products, services or processes through incremental and breakthrough improvements.” Applied specifically to a process, the idea is to keep evaluating how work is done and make changes that improve its performance over time. The change may be small and incremental or a more substantial breakthrough; the defining feature is the recurring effort to learn and improve, not a particular size of change.
Improvement is not a promise that every change will work. Teams use evidence from the process to judge whether an intervention helped and what to do next. A change that fails to produce the expected result can still provide useful information for the next improvement cycle.
How the PDCA cycle supports improvement
Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) is one practical way to organize recurring improvement work. ASQ describes it as a repeatable cycle:

- Plan: Identify an opportunity and plan a change, including what result you expect.
- Do: Test the change on a small scale.
- Check: Review the test, analyze the results against expectations, and identify what was learned.
- Act: Adopt a successful change more broadly, or use the learning to plan a different test.
Measurement and review matter because they help distinguish a useful change from one that merely seems promising. PDCA is a method for carrying out improvement; it is not the definition of continuous process improvement itself. ASQ’s PDCA overview describes the cycle and its use in continuous improvement.
How it relates to other improvement approaches
Continuous process improvement is a broad aim rather than the name of a single method. Lean, Six Sigma, and total quality management (TQM) are among the approaches ASQ identifies as widely used. They share an emphasis on improvement, but their tools and focus can differ.

These approaches are related to continuous improvement, but they are not synonyms for the definition. There is no universal selection rule established by these descriptions. When comparing methods, consider the problem, the scale and pace of change, the data and analysis required, who needs to participate, and how the improved process will be sustained. ASQ’s overview of continuous improvement discusses Lean, Six Sigma, and TQM; its Certified Quality Process Analyst handbook sample includes PDCA, incremental and breakthrough improvement, and DMAIC.
Continuous improvement and continual improvement
ASQ says the terms “continuous improvement” and “continual improvement” are often used interchangeably. Some quality practitioners use a narrower distinction: continuous improvement means linear, incremental changes within an existing process, while continual improvement is a broader umbrella that may include discontinuous changes. That distinction is a practitioner convention, not a universally enforced definition.

Continuous improvement in a quality management system
Continuous process improvement can be part of a wider management system. ISO’s overview of ISO 9001:2026 describes the standard as covering the establishment, maintenance, and continuous improvement of a quality management system, including performance monitoring and evaluation and improvement based on evaluation and other data sources. The overview identifies ISO 9001:2026 as Edition 6; organizations may choose whether to pursue certification. See ISO’s ISO 9001:2026 overview for the standard’s stated scope and edition information.
