Yes—cybersecurity can help protect connected elevators, but the goal is broader than protecting data. Because an elevator is physical equipment, its security also concerns reliable service and safety. The right protections depend on the lift’s actual connections, remote access, age and support arrangements; not every elevator is connected to the internet.

Why elevator cybersecurity is different from data security

A connected elevator is part of operational technology (OT): systems and devices that interact with the physical environment. A lift may exchange information with building networks, cloud services or service tools, and those connections can create security risks as well as support useful operations.

For OT, protecting confidentiality is not the only priority. A change or disruption can affect availability, reliability and safe operation. NIST’s Guide to Operational Technology (OT) Security, SP 800-82r3 (2023), says: “This document provides guidance on how to secure operational technology (OT) while addressing their unique performance, reliability, and safety requirements.” NIST includes building automation among its OT examples; its guide is general OT guidance, not an elevator code.

That does not mean a cyberattack will inevitably trap passengers or cause a crash. The relevant question is what a particular lift is connected to, who can reach those connections, and how the equipment is maintained.

What is known about elevator-specific requirements?

As of October 5, 2026, ISO/DIS 8102-20, edition 2, is a Draft International Standard under development—not a published International Standard or a universal legal requirement. ISO records approval to register the draft as a Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) on September 30, 2026. It is intended to replace ISO 8102-20:2022.

The draft addresses cybersecurity for new lifts, escalators and moving walks, including connected lift-related equipment and interfaces to building networks, cloud services and service tools. Its requirements cover development, manufacture, installation, operation and maintenance, and decommissioning. The stated scope excludes equipment installed before the standard’s publication, so the draft should not be treated as retroactive requirements for existing lifts.

How general OT guidance applies to a building

CISA’s Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance (June 4, 2025) recommends finding internet-exposed assets and deciding whether each exposure is operationally necessary. Where access is needed, its general recommendations include changing default passwords, applying patches, replacing unsupported devices, using a jump host, monitoring traffic and enabling multifactor authentication (MFA) where possible.

CISA’s Guide to Securing Remote Access Software (June 6, 2023) warns that threat actors misuse remote-access software. These are organization-level practices, not lift-specific installation instructions. Have qualified elevator and building OT/security personnel decide how to apply them without disrupting safe operation or service.

What to ask the building owner, maintainer or assessor

A useful review follows each connection from the lift to the people and systems that manage it. Ask the parties responsible for the building and elevator to clarify:

  • Connections and exposure: Which controller, building-network, cloud and service-tool connections exist? Is any system reachable from the internet, and is that exposure necessary?
  • Access governance: Who can access the controller remotely? Who approves that access, how is it authenticated, and where are access events logged?
  • Updates and support: Which party supplies security updates? Are the relevant systems still supported, and what support remains for older equipment?
  • Safe change management: How will proposed security changes be tested and coordinated so they do not interrupt safety functions or elevator service?
  • Responsibility: Which tasks belong to the owner, supplier, integrator and maintainer, and who coordinates them when responsibilities overlap?

Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) published its Building Cyber-Physical Security Measures Guidelines, First Edition in 2019. It provides a building-sector context that includes control equipment such as elevators and air conditioning; it is not a global elevator regulation.

What a security measure can—and cannot—promise

A firewall, network segmentation, MFA or an assessment can be part of a defense, but no single product or certification makes every elevator secure. The right design depends on the actual installation, safe integration, equipment support and operating procedures. TÜV SÜD describes cybersecurity assessment and related services for elevators and building controls, but a site-specific review is still needed to determine what is appropriate.
