A digital audio player (DAP) is a device that stores or accesses digitally encoded audio and plays it back as sound. “MP3 player” is a familiar overlapping term, but MP3 is an audio format—not the definition of the device—and a DAP is not necessarily limited to MP3 files.
What does “digital audio player” mean?
A DAP is an electronic device for playing digitally encoded audio. In a typical playback path, the device reads or receives a digital audio file, decodes it, converts the resulting signal for output, and sends it to a listening device or other audio output. The specific components and connections vary by product; this describes a common signal path, not a required specification for every DAP. IEEE Technology Navigator describes digital audio players as devices that store and reproduce audio encoded in digital formats.
The term usually refers to a physical product, often a portable music player. A DAP might store audio internally or access it another way, but the label alone does not tell you its storage capacity, supported formats, or method for transferring a music library.
Is a DAP the same as an MP3 player?
The terms overlap in everyday use. MP3 is one digital audio format, while DAP describes a device category based on digital audio playback. A product marketed as an MP3 player may support other formats, but do not assume it does: check the specific model’s documentation for supported codecs and file types.

Samsung India Support’s October 12, 2020 definition uses “portable media player” and “digital audio player” for a device that can store and play digital media. It lists audio alongside images, video, and documents, and describes hard drives, microdrives, and flash memory as typical storage. That is a broad vendor description; it does not establish that every DAP has those capabilities or storage types.
How is a DAP different from a portable media player or a phone?
There is no single category boundary that makes these labels mutually exclusive. A portable media player may handle images or video as well as audio, while some descriptions of a DAP focus specifically on audio. The label “DAP” often suggests a dedicated player, but a smartphone can play digital audio too, so the term does not create a universal technical rule excluding phones.

Safety terminology uses a related category, “personal music player.” In the catalog text for SIST EN IEC 62368-1:2020/A11:2020, that category covers portable equipment intended for listening to audio or audiovisual material with earphones or headphones. Its examples include portable CD players, MP3 audio players, and phones with MP3 features. This is safety-context terminology, not a complete universal definition of DAP.

What does the definition not guarantee?
“Digital audio player” is a broad functional label, not a promise of a standard feature set. It does not by itself guarantee a headphone jack, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, expandable storage, video playback, recording, or support for any particular codec. Nor does the label establish that a DAP will sound better than a smartphone. Confirm the capabilities of the particular device before choosing accessories or relying on a feature.
Headphones or earphones are relevant only if they are compatible with the player’s wired output or wireless connections. A memory card is useful only if that model supports removable storage; the definition does not imply that a card is included.
